Cumulus LA cuts staff

I just read that the KLOS PD Bob Buchmann, night jock Jim Ladd, both KABC/KLOS production directors and quite a few others were let go today.

The news must not have got to the website guy, because as of 3:00 pm today, their still on it. But Buchmann is supposed to be on the air any minute. Will he be?

I noticed Jim Ladd is still on the website too.

As anybody who has worked for any period of time in radio knows, it's very rare laid-off deejays ever get to do a last show and say goodbye to the listeners.

This is done to avoid any potential on-air problems and inviting listeners to the deejay's new home on the dial.

The only time this ever happens is if the deejay is going to an entirely different, far away market, or is retiring.

Anyone who has followed Jim Ladd over the years know he is bit of a firecracker, and he defines the reason you don't ever want to give a laid-off deejay a formal, final show.

Uncle Joe Benson gets resurrected more than the mythical Phoenix. Going from weekend duties for what seems like years back to afternoon drive once again. It's nice to see Joe still has staying power but he must be thinking in the back of his mind that the hatchet could reach his neck next if Cumulus continues swinging.

Well the selections of just who got the cut this time around speaks volumes. First the still-relatively new boss Buchmann, who replaced the very popular old boss, Rita Wilde and gave himself the cushy afternoon-drive timeslot. The next choice was Ladd, the most opinionated and outspoken voice in the building. Literally, the Dr. Johnny Fever of the station. The message sent to everyone else is clear: We are the new bosses, keep your mouth shut, your nose clean, and MAYBE you'll be allowed to stick around in whatever menial capacity we have for you. Meeting over.

And after checking the new KLOS schedule, Joe Benson is granted the utmost privilege to work a full shift on any day that ends with 'y'.

And as expected, Jim Ladd gripes about not being able to have that opportunity before getting the ax:
