Cumulus Media/ Houston

Seriously, what is Cumulus Houston doing with respect with KIOL? I am really not interested in hearing the same rhetoric but some real speculation. In the last 8 months they have now lost their two bookend talents in opposing drive times (W&J and Outlaw Dave). Then, People Meter launches and K-Hits sky rockets (well deserved) to the top of the Male heap. Today, they are shopping to take it private (not a bad move on the business side at all)..... so what does this really mean?

All you Engineers out there, are they going to spin KIOL/ KFNC out of Houston to Beaumont since KRBE is under a separate company anyway?

Thanks for the idea starter that Pruett and Shannon return (nice to think about but man... realistic?) Houston has become the hot potato town of the world. Malone hops, then R&Ryan hop, W&J hop twice... hmmm.

I really think it is realistic. They were the top rated show on KFNC, as little as that says, and have strong ties to management here in Houston. I wouldn't be the least bit surprised to see Pruett and Boner on KIOL in very short order.

Now if you want to surprise me, throw Mark Stevens into the fold and we'll talk.

Rhetoric aside, KIOL is going to stay around. I'd go so far as to say the talent is eventually dropped, outside of AM drive, and we end up with the Rock version of 97.1. KIOL is Pat Fant's baby. As long as he is in control at the station, it will survive.

I'm a huge fan of Stevens and Pruett. I'd love to see them back but it won't happen. Fant is a figure head at Cumulus. Anyone in the biz--even peripherally knows that. Cumulus makes the decision and he carries it out. Sad too. He's a smart and creative guy. I respected what he did to and with KLOL.

Pruett and Shannon?? In my opinion, it was an OK show and even had it moments but it never had the impact that S&P did. Shannon was better as the Boner. As Shannon, he just seemed angry

Pruett wont work with Stevens (who can blame him) and I doubt boner's wife will let him try radio a third time. He was doing very well in real estate after he left KLOL.

Boner sold my friend a house in League City a few years back. He said that Boner would stop by some of the neighborhood gatherings to drink a beer or two and shoot the shit.. Said that he'd do the voice on request!!

Is it just me, or are we beating a dead horse to death, even further? Rock radio is dead. The only living form left is The Buzz, which is rock radio for those under 30/35 years old. I hate to say it, but in my opinion, both W&J and Stevens and Pruitt are dinosaurs. If I was the station, I would abandon the format totally. Sorry to be blunt, but it's the truth with the state of radio these days.

It's dead in Houston. No one knows how to program one. It can be done, but no one has shown it can be done in Houston for the past 10 years. Sure, they can program a classic rock station with the same 100 songs, or an "alternative" rock station, or an oldies rock station, but not a true AOR station. Yes, it can be done in Houston (hell, give me the reigns, and I'll show you how) but no one has proved it in a long time.

Current "rock" is dead. That's why you don't see bands like Van Halen releasing new albums now, and why Guns 'n Roses keep putting the release date back on "Chinese Democracy" (What going on 10 years now?). Sure, there are bands like Poison making small comebacks (with an album of remakes) but no true rock artist is making new music that the masses want to hear.

KISS in San Antonio is definitely an exception. They benefit from being a legend. KLOL had that legendary status in their hay day, but they sat on it and didn't progress during the late 90's, which made them fail. It's also why KIOL was a failure (not to mention their lack of coverage). I know a lot of people that love rock, but they all focus on music 15+ years ago -- NONE of them have bought a new rock album in the past 10 years (unless it was from an alternative rock band).

In the latest (ppm) ratings for adults 25-54, the Arrow was number 1, Buzz was number 2. I think that reports on the death of rock radio are greatly exaggerated;

Furthermore, those numbers tell me that a giant hole exists in Houston right now.

Why wont Pruett work with Stevens?

If memory serves, it was Marky boy who blew up at a staff meeting that led to S&P being pulled off KLOL then it became Pruett and Grego (I think that who it was with Jim).....I have heard Stevens had temper issues all the time while at KLOL with Pruett....just like an ex morning team at 93Q...on the air, it was all lovey dovey but as soon as the mics were off, they were in the hall at each other's throats from what staffers told me......I also recall hearing a certain M/F morning team at 107.5 in its classic rock days were the same way...ahh the "hidden" radio stories.....especially one about a broadcast convention in San Antonio DECADES ago where a certain blonde morning personality got soooo drunk, she.........well, we'll hold that one for later ;)

Actually, it's Mark Stevens that won't work with Pat Fant. He and Pruett are still buddies, but the relationship between Stevens & Fant is quite contentious and Mark swore to everyone a long time ago he wouldn't and couldn't work for Fant ever again. He also believes S&P is in the past and as great as it once was, it's now a part of Houston and Texas radio history. Both Stevens and Pruett are terrific/talented people and most of us would love to see their showed reprised, but I don't think you'll ever see that again. Those guys were actually the predecessors to Howard Stern. In fact S&P (or H&H as they were at KILT many moons ago) blazed the trail for Stern and other shock jocks. They should be in the radio Hall of Fame.

Although I doubt this to be a HUGE indicator of the level of cooperation between all three, Stevens and Pruett did recently do a radio commercial for Spark Power Bank. They approached it with the same delivery they have always had. The commercial was aired on 103.7...

Damn I must have missed that...I DO have some S&P recordings from their days on 790 before they left for Dallas...
Star Trots, etc.....gawd those WERE the days...I would love to hear that Spark Power ad...(of course electric competition is a lie anyway....Look at the rates and how fast they have risen....yet go into a regulated area like Woodlands or Conroe [Entergy]...and they're MUCH cheaper...so much for dereg!)
