Cumulus/NC Re: Hurricane Irene: EPIC FAIL

I've been sampling some of the streams and websites of radio stations in the Eastern North Carolina area that are plagued by Hurricane Irene at this hour. I've punched up a few Cumulus stations - WGNI, WWQQ, and even WFNC, the talk station - all running regular programming - at least they are on their streams... but you'd think if they were carrying hurricane coverage, that would be on their streams just as they would be over the air. But no, "Cape Fear's Country Leader" thinks it's more important to play a Darius Rucker record than to serve as a public service. I was more shocked at WFNC, airing what sounded like a brokered health program instead of giving listeners vital weather details.

Way to go, Cumulus.

these stations should be taking away from Cumuless and given to a company that is willing to serve the community.
there is no excuse for the awful coverage I have heard coming out of eastern nc.

I know - unbelievable. Sampled WFNC moments ago and it sounds like a fourth-tier syndicated talk show. But then again, Cumulus is proving to be a fourth-tier radio broadcaster with their lack of local coverage!

To be fair, I did hear a hurricane update on WGNI, but it was just that - an update. Not necessarily what people in hurricane zones want - either go wall-to-wall with live coverage, or simulcast 3, 6 or 26 or what have you. Don't run an update (which sounded canned, btw) and then go back to music. I know WGNI's "Awesome 80's Weekends" are somewhat popular, but in the name of Mother Nature, exceptions must be made.

And this is the entity that's going to be enveloping Citadel. Great.

WFNC just did a real short update, but it's building into what seems like just another Saturday morning infomercial, for a cleanup company.
I don't know who was listening after the 1.5 hrs of krill oil talk, though.

This is surprising and disappointing. WGNI has always prided themselves on air as being the best hurricane coverage station in the area.

The Cumulus Stations in Wilmington should be ashamed of themselves, since they cut their news department back in late May, their crediblity has been diminished, and don't they have a partnership with WECT?, they never put it to use during the Saturday of the storm, and did anyone notice some of the stations were off the air?, i thought they had a generator at the tower sites, has it gotten to the point that the owners don't care?, I agree with a previous post that their five stations there should be owned by someone else, and down the road it might happen, especially when Cumulus closes on their purchase of Citadel and they have to sell the smaller market stations to stay afloat, in closing, i must say this, how the mighty have fallen...

I was in Myrtle Beach just after Fran, and WGNI was doing all hurricane coverage.

That was when Cape Fear Broadcasting owned WGNI, they were sold in 1999.

I remember when Fran, Bertha and Floyd hit Eastern NC, WGNI was there! They even had great coverage with Hugo in 1989 and that storm went into Charleston, SC. Also WGNI ran promos during that era saying, "We are your hurricane station!" I am not sure how they do their programming during those events now but they were on top of things 24/7!

I remember WGNI's hurricane coverage in the 60s and 70s. We rented hotel rooms across the street, several staffers stayed up all night, while others slept. It was an even bigger deal in those days because TV didn't have the technology to do the coverage.
