Cumulus' new NY area Urban station

Curtis Sliwa says he's auditioning for a DJ slot (presumably in addition to his C&K shift) tomorrow on 103.9 WFAS-FM which is the station Cumulus has been rumored to be flipping to Urban.

I heard Curtis talking about it this morning. I wonder if this is a joke. Will 103.9's signal stay in White Plains/Hartsdale and serve White Plains/Greenburgh/Mount Vernon/Yonkers/New Rochelle or will the signal move to the Bronx?

From the Curtis and Kuby podcast page link below, click on the show labeled

Allegedly, Curtis will be "auditioning" on WFAS-FM on Friday the 13th of June from 11am-4pm while Bernard McGuirk sits in for him on WABC.
Curtis claims he's auditioning for "the nighttime position on the new urban station".

Curtis says he heard about the new urban station (WFAS-FM) from the Cumulus sales department.

Curtis also mentions his appearance on SNY-TV (the Mets-centric sports channel) on Thursday evening 6/12/14 at 10:30pm ET.
Details on that show from SNY's TV listings:
10:30 PM "Oh Yeah... 1994" Oh Yeah... is a gold mine of obscure, oddball, and twisted stories spanning 40 years in New York Sports… and nothing is off limits. With interviews involving celebrity and sports personalities, SNY takes a look back at those nostalgic stories that make you say, “Oh Yeah..”

The SNY program repeats several times.

while urban ac would be a logical choice for a New York station Cumulus is the last company I would imagine doing it. They don't have many urban stations and that's not where they put their focus.

wfas

Urban A/C? A logical choice for NYC? Are you joking me?!?! We are the largest market in the country without an Alternative Rock station or a Current Based Rock station! Screw Urban A/C we have BLS for that! BRING ON THE ROCK!!!!!!!!!!!

I think if it does go URBAN then make it Old School Hip-Hop and R&B format. Theres a void for that type of format. Hot 97 and Power 105 doesn't play 80s 90s and 00s music at all, unless its a mixshow

Wow that is fantastic news, a great idea, lets have yet another station in the metro catering to the Black and Hispanic audience, we only have 30 or so now, one more won't hurt. For the Rock listener, forget it, Rock is dead and gone, there is no Rock audience, its just a mirage, don't believe the hype, when Rock and Alternative concerts sell out in 3 seconds in the NYC area, and Rock formats are in the top 3 in all major and minor markets that have one, its just a rumor.

If the signal is Class A and is strongest in the Bronx, Mount Vernon and Yonkers once the signal is moved, I wonder if Rock would be the right format.

I really don't see rock being played in the Hip Hop clothing stores on Fordham Road or in the Jamaican restaurants on Gun Hill Road in the Bronx and the South Side of Mount Vernon or the latin bodegas in the South Bronx.

It doesnt make since to put rock on 103.9 when their signal is covering The Birth Place of Hip-Hop area. The coverage is covering most of the urban areas in nyc. I think Urban A/C/Old School Hip-Hop would be the best format. NYC doesnt need another straight R&B station like BLS. We need an Urban station for the 25-54 crowd. But I honestly think that NYC only needs 3 Urban stations. 1 R&B, 1 Old School Hip-Hop, and 1 Current Urban.
Its sad that the legends of Hip-Hop that's from ny that paved the way for Hip-hop is not getting played anymore. Its like what have you done lately now these days. sad:mad:

Could someone please post a coverage map for the proposed new location? IIRC, the station won't reach Long Island. It won't reach Jersey. Does it even reach Manhattan? I'd love for Cumulus to put Alternative in NYC, but would the signal of WFAS make sense for rock? The Bronx just doesn't scream Foster the People and Mumford & Sons to me.

The FCC construction permit for the WFAS FM transmission site in the Bronx, granted in 2011 requires that an application for a License to Cover must be filed by late July, or it would be forfeited.
Assuming that Cumulus submits the request by then, how much time does the FCC allow till broadcasting must actually commence from that location? Could WFAS' owner Cumulus Media then delay using the site for a substantial period of time by filing Silent Temporary Authority requests?
If they believe there is no format they could put on the new site that would do well, perhaps they figure that it may be preferable to sell it or use it in a potential trade towards another signal, such as WBAI or WQBU 92.7.
