I don't believe Cumulus has made their last format flip in the market even after the new Q100 20 flip today. Their biggest flip/re-brand is waiting in the wings. Why hasn't it gone down yet because they are waiting for Dave to make their flip which should be soon with football in full swing this weekend. Do your best to follow my deranged min but here I go.
For now let's just call their newest flip/re-brand 100.5 the X, Atlanta's New(est) Rock Station.
Imaging: Built around a fictional character called Dave, think Wendell from 99x.
Next time someone asks you what station you listen to tell them Dave sent you to 100.5 the X.
4 out of 5 Daves recommend 100.5 the X.
Billboard: 100.5 the X, Dave's first choice for Rock.
Line-up:
6 - 10 The Regular Guys
10 - 3 Mara Davis
3 - 7 Axel
7 - 10 Margot plus her role as Music director
Organic X on Sunday morning.
Before you flame my fantasy post and tell me it can't happen because Mara and Margot will have to sit out 6 months, hear me out. Cumulus is CBS' partner for sales and distribution of the the just about to roll-out CBS Sports Radio Network. Cumulus poses the biggest threat to the new 92.9 station by simply moving 680 to a simulcast on 100.5 but I don't believe that happens because John Dickey just proclaimed Cumulus the savior of Rock music in Atlanta with their flip of 99x to 98.9 the bone. You can't be the savior of rock in Atlanta if you kill off 99x and Rock 100.5 within a few weeks of each other and all you haveleft is a station called the Bone.
The Dickeys can use this as leverage to acquire talent from the departing Dave by having CBS waive the non-competes. What is the point anyway? Margot and Mara don't pose a major threat to the sports talks core audience so why bench them for 6 months. They have been loyal long-term employees. Mara Davis is certainly the jewel that will increase listeners and advertisers instantaneously. AAA/Alternative doesn't appear to be a Cumulus stronghold so Margot brings credibility and experience to the format.
Here is the Cumulus' chance to be the Knight in Shining Armor to Atlanta's rock audience. Will they do it, can they do it. My bet is yes.
