Cumulus - Pensacola, What arew they thinking???

WOW!
Could this be why I've been hearing 100.7 go QRT at night? (just a carrier)
The FWB ***. seems to be more automated, too.

and I thought *** was doing quite well, even hearing them hiring spots for a sales person for their new Destin office.

The hiring of jocks seems to be a practice that's stuck in the past and that's a shame, too.
Thanks to Starguide and other services on G27 and the various birds. Jocks seem to be limited on the air.

getting back to the original topic. Who replaced him? I heard him on the net stream earlier this week.
Or is this thread much ado about nothing?

FWIW, it can't be much fun trying to sell a #9 AM ("uh, whatever we did last year.")... the 3rd or 4th AC in the market ("yeah, it sounds fine, but we've really got Women 25-54 & 18-49 pretty well covered") and the Other Urban Station ("We've been using 'BLX & a little 'RNE for 20 years and it seems to work okay..."). Especially with a young-or-inexperienced sales staff without any longheld customer relationships.

Bottom line is that the bottom line for the Cumulus Pensacola cluster probably isn't very good. With due respect for the accomplishments of both WCOA and Luke, the Mighty 1370 was springing leaks when he jumped on, and he had a long ride on that particular sinking ship. Again, I hope the real story is that he's just ready to go fishin'...

Is the cluster salvageable? Sure. But probably not without having to blow up an FM or two and starting from scratch.

Surely --- the FWB Crum-cluster isn't billing more than Pensacola is it?

LOL!!! Yeah, maybe... probably. Here's the kicker, though.

Shortly after posting the above--that selling those babies ain't likely a picnic and that they need to blow 'em up and start over--I flip onto All Access... read the Net News... then move on to "Jobs" to see if any of my pals or competitors just got the axe. And what do I behold? Two brand-new (like This Afternoon New) postings for...
A) a Local Sales Manager for the three-station Cumulus Pensacola cluster, and
B) more Account Executives for Cumulus Pensacola

You've got to read them--they're hilarious. The AE ad starts with a novella about 16th century explorers...

No, thanks. I'll stay up here in the mountains. It's getting ready to snow any minute!

True enough, RNR, Pensacola doesn't have the assets that Panama City Beach/Wootenville has. I'm with ya,
sand is for vacation/entertainment purposes only...not "work." I'll stick to Music City's gently rolling hills, beauty
and sophistication. It's a vibrant, incredible city (I'll let you keep the snow, though up your way, til mid-January.)
and just let flickr's photo sets play on the computer of the memories of raydio in the Panhandle.

I do have to admit, though, seems like Pensacola was more vibrant in the day than Destin/FWB was *(as it was
just starting to grow inthe 90's.) It's sad that those 100kw sticks aren't able to generate anything like they should down
there in P-cola. Holliday's had FWB/Destin rolling along just fine until Mix 103 flipped and 98.1 started it's 18 month
ride. Still, they didn't miss a beat. Maybe Qantum can get a grip on positioning if Crum-blinks in FWB. An update on
that from the OM would be cool. Positive note, the Q force may be larger than Crumy in a few months, if not before.
Is it possible that Mark Carter at Seabreeze has a bigger payroll than anyone else in FWB? (that's a semi-joke.)

I'll start by admitting that my memory has been slipping quite a bit since I got old, but I believe that I remember reading newspaper articles about 10 - 15 years ago listing WXBM and WCOA as the top two radio stations in the Pensacola market. Both stations would have had over a 10 share back then.

WCOA's lineup is basically the same as it was 10 years ago, what happened to the listeners?

Is the NPR station, WUWF, taking a significant number of listeners away from WCOA?

With the ratings for WCOA so low, why are 3 other stations trying to compete for the news/talk numbers (WEBY, WPNN, and currently unrated WNRP)?

I'm literally laughing out loud reading these post while hurting inside for major mountain it had to climb to fix its reputation and revenue after the first stint of Pizati. Just since that jackass became RVP, Pensacola fell off that mountain.

NEWS FLASH: The Market Manager they brought in just over a year ago was fired by the Jackass on Tuesday!!

In the past two years:
- 3 Market Managers
- 6 Sales Managers
- 3 Program Directors
- Over 40 Sales Reps (About ten of them that had tenure, Super Sellers)

Now you tell me....Who's to blame????????

Is Gary Coleman still working there?

Whew, that's scary. Hey, Tibbs, we thought radio was unstable 20-30 years ago! For any MM, SM or AE stepping into that revolving door, it would take a year or so just to get clients/prospects to stop laughing long enough to listen to a pitch. Clients do, in fact, forget about this kind of clusterf**k, but it takes awhile.

And, yes, the FWB cluster probably IS outbilling the Pcola cluster. Although there's two or three times the advertising money in the Pensacola market, Cumulus' Pensacola cluster is way down the list of radio players--and TV takes a big chunk, too. Television takes a much smaller slice of the Fort Walton revenue pie, and Cumulus has the top 5 radio stations (6 of the top 7) in the FWB Spring 08 Arbitron--so they're in a much stronger selling position.

Early in my career as a GM--25 or 30 years ago--a wise mentor gave me the following advice. He said "Make the big decisions correctly and all the little stuff will fall into place; but if you screw up the big decisions, you can make all the little decisions perfectly and it will make absolutely no difference."

Cumulus has screwed up the big decisions. And it looks like their scramble to solve it on the wrong end has cost about 50 people their jobs, so far.

I suppose the obvious question is how long will it take before the problem is addressed? The number of people through that building should be sending up a red flag to someone you'd think if not the loss of revenue.

Doesn't really matter. The Dickey's are worth millions, combined billions. They're certainly not stupid people.
They use OPM. For a couple of years all I have been saying was how much more they could have made for themselves
and shareholders by running a tighter ship. They're used to a huge ship with lots of little holes in it. Pensacola
is not much different, turnoverwise, from many of their markets.

The Market Manager at Cumulus in Pensacola is out, hmmm, are you sure about that? The nice folks at the front desk think he still works there, at least he's there today.
