Cumulus requests KLIF-FM

It seems to be completely lost on the other thread that there are numerous KLIF snippets in-between the music snippets 93.3 is stunting with. If a "legend" is returning and they are playing KLIF airchecks and jingles, perhaps 93.3 will be KLIF-FM.

A check this afternoon with the FCC call sign system shows KLIF-FM was put on hold for Cumulus Monday. Go to http://svartifoss2.fcc.gov/prod/callsign/prod/main.html, hit the query button and type in "KLIF"...

So, perhaps (1) oldies (for its 60s/70s top 40 days), (2) classic country (pre-talk days), or (3) 570 moves there? If (3), that would allow KTCK to move down to the much better 570 facility. Granted the fan base is smaller, but the Stars season starts shortly and all the night games will not get heard on the new flagship 1310 very well.

It was stated earlier that the format would be a music format, but at this stage, who knows. If the were going Top 40 with I 93.3, they would not need the KLIF call letters.

Wasn't KLIF a top40 back in the day?

KLIF was a "legendary" Top-40 station in the 60's

Yeah, but I have history with 570 KLIF. I started there in Dec. 1993. Its my radio home.

That goes along with the i93 theory. KLIF... 570 and 1310 could still swap frequencies.

The calls of Cumulus' i94 in Indianapolis are WRWM (from its previous "Warm" handle). The calls of Cumulus' i106 in Nashville are WNFN (from its previous "Fan" handle). Of course, Cumulus' "Wolf" here is still KPLX.

If it is going to go by "i93", it doesn't matter what the calls are since they will be buried once an hour for a legal ID.

I would think if you are going to change the calls and every minute or two right now, there is a snippet from KLIF's past of someone saying "KLIF" or a KLIF jingle, the KLIF calls will be part of 93.3's new format and image.

Maybe it will be CHR, but that nostalgia for a top 40 station that hasn't been around since the late 1970s isn't going to seem very hip...

From allaccess.com tonight:

"Sources inside the company tell ALL ACCESS that the station will feature the legendary KLIF call letters and will play "Legends, Icons and Favorites" of some sort, but no word has been given as to a specific format."

If true, that doesn't scream CHR...

Maybe it isn't very "hip,” but there a boat-load of us who remember KLIF in it's hey-day with Charlie and Harrigan, Charlie Van Dyke, Hal Martin, Ron McAllister, etc. Many of those people would tune in, if for no other reason than to hear what is going on. After all, what else is there for the over 50 crowd? KAAM? Most of the early baby boomers aren't quite that dead yet.

These people are still active, even if it means using Viagra, and "Hip" frequently refers to some kind of "replacement surgery." These days AARP stands for "Angry, Armed and Really Pissed." It is a group to be dealt with. Those who cater to it might find that it is profitable.

I think chip mean the rumors about 93.3 going to CHR/Top40.

From what allaccess is saying. Might be a big yay for me. One can only hope!

Wasn't Micheal Jackson refered to as an "Icon" at the start of his set? Favorites could be "Favorite hits" that Kiss FM currently plays. Legends.... ?????

AGREED! If they go with the KLIF calls its got to be a 60's-70's format, or its a waste of the calls where it would actually mean something to the demographic. i think it would be great! but, has anybody mentioned KLUV and why DFW would need another format like this in town?

Yes, that was my point. The KLIF nostalgia would be an odd choice to image a top 40 station around since usually CHRs are positioned as what is new and "now."

Yesterday afternoon, the played a montage of Jackson, top 40 hits, R&B songs, smooth jazz songs, old soul songs, and then country songs. Regardless of their "wheel of music" stops, inserted in there are old KLIF snippets and clips of audio where someone says "legend," "legends," etc.

Whether or not the i933hits.com website has been registered, it could be a smoke screen or for another station (Cumulus owns 3 other stations on 93.3 -- Midland/Odessa, Fort Walton Beach, and Huntsville AL). I still think it would be odd to change the calls to KLIF-FM and use all the old KLIF audio clips if they didn't plan to brand around those calls.

93.3 seems to be one of those cursed frequencies (its lousy signal doesn't help). Has any format worked? (Didn't the original Bone start off gang busters and die a slow death?). Seems like it would be smart to simulcast the Ticket on there. Nothing to lose. It would save money. Give Ticket a little more coverage, plus cachet of being on FM. Still don't know why they wouldn't also put Ticket on 570 and put KLIF out of its misery on the weak 1310 frequency.
