Cumulus Sells Albany GA Cluster To First Media Services

$450,000 for five stations??? That's just 90K per. Can someone please explain?

Holy cow. Cumulus must have wanted out of Albany like a frog wants out of the soup pot.

https://radioinsight.com/headlines/186667/cumulus-sells-albany-ga-cluster-to-first-media-services/

The affected stations are Adult R&B “V101.7” WQVE Albany, “Rock 103” 103.5 WJAD Leesburg, Country “Nash-FM 104.5” WKAK Albany,
AC “Mix 107.7” WEGC Sasser, and Talk 1590 WALG Albany with CP for 99.3 W257ED Albany.

Note Cumulus has sold the Albany, GA cluster at $450k as in the report.

Well that was a bargain, especially since there 1st buy was almost 2 million for 6 stations, wonder whats next for cumulus stations in GA. Atlanta, Macon and Savannah are all that's left for them here.

they got 1 boomer signal in WKAK, 2 OK Signals in WJAD and WEGC and 2 City Signals in WALG and WQVE. maybe they can put some life into SW GA Radio, just maybe

For decades it has been one of the worst radio markets in the country. Weak, low income economy, too many stations after Docket 80-90 are some of the factors. It's sort of like a big Valdosta...

They have a payroll to meet.

If they're down to running fire-sales to finance the company's payroll, they might as well pack it in and go bankrupt again.

The value of a station is based on the market as well as the historical performance of individual stations. Albany is a terrible, over-radioed and low billing market.

It would not surprise me to learn that the stations had not been on a positive cash flow trend and that getting rid of them will actually make the company more profitable.

"...like a big Valdosta..." perfect description.

The cluster, I'm told, was doing nearly $1 million a year but Cumulus was losing their rears which is not surprising. I heard they spent about $5 million putting this cluster together. There is a lot of radio there but reality is there are only two viable commercial operators in the market, Cumulus and iHeart, and they own all the viable FM signals. If Cumulus is getting $1 million annually then most of the remaining $3 million of annual revenue is going to iHeart and probably $2 million of that total is from WJIZ, the legacy urban 100,000 watter. I bet a lot of that business is agency/national. WJIZ has long enjoyed huge ratings. Cumulus has much better signals over Albany proper than iHeart. Other than WJIZ, the other iHeart stations have signals coming in from some distance away. All of Cumulus stations are right in Albany or just a few miles out of town.

If you dig deeper in the Cumulus sale contract, it looks like their office building is included plus a couple towers and some more real estate. I looked up and saw Dougherty County assessor's office has the studio office building valued at $600,000. Sell it, you still have $250,000 more than you paid for everything, keep the radio stations and it wouldn't have any impact on the revenue.

I think Cumulus is just desperate to shed stations. They are in the worst financial shape of any of the big operators and that was before the pandemic. Entercom is probably close behind them in second worse financial condition then iHeart would be third. Problem with all is they are still way too much in debt despite Cumulus and iHeart recently being in bankruptcy. You can't have much debt in a business model like radio which at best is a no growth slow decline business.

Albany went from being one of the fastest growing cities in the nation during the 1950s, 60s and early 70s to stuck in the muck especially after long time mayor and local power broker, media guru James H. Gray died unexpectedly from a blood clot during routine legal surgery in Boston. That was 1986. There wasn't much of a bench of leadership left.

It has been a long time since an on location local operator has run the radio stations there. In fact, there has never been since consolidation of the radio industry began in 1996. The new owner is going in the right away and that's not paying too much. There other cluster in is Bluefield, WV. That's no Garden of Eden either. They paid nearly $2 million for those stations. They must be doing pretty well or they wouldn't have ventured into another deal so soon.

big difference with iheart stations though, 3 of those stations are 100kw Blowtorch Signals and cover more area than most of Cumulus stations in Albany other than WKAK which there only great signal which is probably the cash cow in the cluster

WKAK has been underperforming for a long time. That was one of the reasons why Cumulus ditched K-Country to put the Nash branding on it, which did far worse. Don’t know how everything bills in the market, but the highest rated Cumulus station is usually WJAD.

WJIZ is the highest rated station in the market. It’s probably no longer the case, but, in the late-80’s/early-90’s, WJIZ was often the highest-rated station in the country. It often got near a 50 share, and the WJIZ/WJYZ combo got over a 60 once or twice.

It'll be interesting to see how long the new owners keep the Nash name and programming.

I’m guessing it'll be similar to what happened when Monticello bought the Cumulus properties in Blacksburg. The Nash name was gone pretty much as soon as they got the keys!

The Nash name is disappearing from Cumulus stations too. :) The FMS station in Bluefield WV is live all day, but syndicated at night. So I'm guessing they'll keep Elaina and Blair.
