Buffalo Cumulus sells AM to Buddy Shula

Well, well, well. Buddy has purchased WHLD for $150k. Just like he said.

My bet is Buddy will do just fine with it. Buddy ain't dumb. He has a plan in place, and he'll turn it into a money-maker just like WECK. Unlike Cumulus, Townsquare and Audacy, Buddy's local and knows what works in Buffalo and will make the station fit the demo he's after, not trying to force the listeners in Buffalo to accept whatever corporate format they're trying to cram down everyone's ears.

Congrats, Buddy. I may have had my differences with you over some of your comments, but you know what you're doing, you're local and you love Radio and know more about Radio than most of the people on this planet. I for one can't wait to see what he has planned for it. I applaud you for WECK. I listen online and wish more stations made their website local and easy to navigate like WECK's is.

Before anyone starts bashing the purchase and starting the doom and gloom of it'll never work, give it 6 months. Buddy will no doubt be laughing all the way to the bank.

Please buy KB too…. It would be wonderful to resurrect that once great station/signal.

The problem with that signal is the high expense of running it.. running a 1 or 5kw is hella cheaper on electricity alone

@Buddy :

Im super curious, and feel free to direct message or a diplomatic answer here:
( can't comment at the this time, however stayed tuned )

Would you consider one of the WECK LP.FM 's going to the new shiny toy ??

ie 1270 / 100.5

Looking at the most usable > 10 mV/m signal of the new acquisition and the daytime coverage of his original (former) Class IV AM, it would seem possible to simulcast the two. The question is whether there is a translator available in that county or whether one of the existing ones can be "nudged" in that direction without losing total Erie Country coverage.

I don't know all that _ but I'm sure one day I will hear country kat radio on the fm dial

I'm sure the first thing Buddy did after starting on this deal was to look at picking up a translator as a future acquisition. There's certainly no reason to think he doesn't already have a deal in the works to be announced shortly.

We've been talking here about classic country, and I think Buddy REALLY wants to do it. That's my bet.
I think Buddy's been very upfront about his intentions. This is going to be something unique to Buffalo and VERY local. No 'Hank FM' or re-hash of what someone else is doing. I'm anxious to see what June 1 brings. "Buffalo's Country Legends WHLD" anyone?

Congrats, Buddy. Great property with a virtually new transmitter and towers that were brought into compliance last fall according to fccdata.org. The signal has some overlap, but a lot better reach to the north since it was originally a Niagara Falls signal, not as much to the east. Tough to find a translator, but it could be a nice piece of a duopoly if he can get his hands on 107.7 and its translator. 150K is pocket change at this point, although the current towers are owned by Kimtron, so no real estate is included. The towers are shared with Crawford's WDCZ (970 AM), so a lease is involved as currently configured.

Either that or bring the yacht rock format up from the Keys.
I love the yacht rock format and listen online, but don't know enough about the market to understand if it would translate to Buffalo. My instinct is that it's a format very much of its place in Key West, just like WECK is for Buffalo. Neither would work if you swapped their locations.

Barrett Media's reporting of this story seems to confuse Radio One Buffalo with CBC Radio One:

The “exploding pizza” logo for the CBC has been around since the early 1970s. Appears those involved with Barrett Media have never come across it in all those years.🤪🤣

Why does it always seem that Barrett Media is the site that often has to retract stories later when they got the facts wrong?
