Cumulus to Pay Minimum Wage to Part-Timers

I read that Cumulus notified part-timers nationwide that they will be paid the minimum wage of $7.15 per hour starting on April 1 if they wish to stay.

Doesn't McDonald's pay burger flippers more than that?

Working in small-town radio about a decade ago, I used to joke with the late-night cleaning guy that he made more money being there than I did. He thought I was joking. Sad thing is, the joke was on me, it was true.

Minimum wage is actually $6.55 per hour in Georgia and most states, so its a tad more. Still, who wants to work for minumum wage unless youre at McDonalds.

According to Penn State's Living Wage Calculator, a 'fair' wage for a single person with no children in the heart of Atlanta is around $9 (or higher) an hour. That $9 figure assumes full time employment (40 hours a week, 52 weeks a year), so that should tell you how cheap Cumulus is being with part-timers.

And the company will probably have no problem filling those positions, regardless of pay.

I have a friend who works for another cluster (doing regular weekends, fill etc) & has been employed there for 5 years. Goes beyond
the call of duty (works severe storms,etc) and makes minimum wage. My friend has over 20 years experience. And everytime my friend
has requested a pay increase. It falls on deaf ears... And this was before the economy hit the crapper, btw...

However, when the PD hires a good friend of his. That person gets 2 bucks an hour more... Go figure.....

$18,720 / year to live in Atlanta? Even if you're single I sure don't see how. That's not realistic.

Cumulus is one of the cheapest companies around. I hear that now they have reduced some full-timers to part-time pay, meanwhile the CEO DICKey gave himself a $500k bonus while laying off people making practically nothing. What a horrible company to work for.

It seems to be a common business practice. Eleven years ago when I was in Augusta, a new GM came into the cluster, and one of the first things he did to pad the budget was to cut all the part-timers down a dollar an hour. Actually, I went down a dollar an hour. The rest (some of who I thought were full-time since they had a full-time air schedule) that were with the cluster for years got cut more because we were all at the same pay scale once it was all said and done.

Even if it is an early April Fools gag, there's still probably better career growth potential at Mickey D's than in radio.
