Cumulus trimming some fat? WSBA (No pun intended)

I have noticed over the past several weeks that WSBA has been alternating several days a week where Jim Horn will be off one morning, then Gary Sutton the next. They always refer to the other as being on "assignment" or taking a vacation day.

I am guessing that this is just another cost cutting measure...

Agreed - it's not the best... I sometimes tune in to 580, but I'm not a big fan there either.

Recommend any good morning (talk) shows?

Actually I've heard some very interesting interviews on the WSBA morning show. But one has to wonder as the Cumulus grim reaper makes its way through their markets how much longer that show will be able to support four people.

I must admit I do enjoy the first moments of the 6 am show on Mon. & Wed. John Leboutillier (Mon morn)
& Chris Malinowski (Wed morn) are pretty good.

Wish Jim & Gary could give them more than a couple of minutes though... ::)

So, is Jim Horn on the way out? What does he really add to the morning information? Cool.

No. Jim is in charge of AM programming which includes WSBA, and the three ESPN stations..1440, 1400, and 1240. Jim isn't going anywhere.

Jim Horn knows sports programming? Wow! He was once quoted in print, stating "sports doesn't sell on radio."

Two things;

Jeff Schiffman - Is this guy the most unprepared sports news reporter? Seems like every time they throw the ball to him he fumbles all over the place searching for words. Maybe he just prints out the copy & doesn't read it over before going live...

Gary Sutton - Maybe it's just me, but it sounds like he always has a mouth full of doughnuts. I like him and I think he is a fair host to the callers/guests, but it sounds like he is always eating something when I hear him talk.

Perhaps that was before the advent of the 24 hour all sports stations. Once music transitioned to FM, you had all these AM stations that needed programming. Not everybody can be all conservative talk, liberal talk has proven to be a failure almost everywhere (who is that bozo that airs on WIOO and WHYL on the weekends? ) So the sports networks like ESPN came into being. Cumulus owns three of them in Central PA. You won't get high ad rates on these stations but there is a niche for them.

That's the Rick Smith Show, "where working people come to talk." Its a brokered program, union-sponsored, worth it to us to air to generate some $$$ in off-peak time (he's on weeknights 9 to midnight). While I am far from agreeing with him 100-percent, as a moderate Democrat I like many of his views and find he has a very insightful knowledge of the issues.

He sounds like Mel Tillis doing a sports report. And that's they way he sounds EVERY day, folks.

How about the local sports team, the Revolution? Oh yeah that's right -- Todd & WSBA fumbled that too because they insisted on having doughnut mouth in the "boof".

Jeff Schiffman once had his own gig as a sports talk host on WSBA. It didn't work! His lack of experience in two major arenas showed up on the air: talk experience and play-by-play. As for doing play-by work, one has to be able to ad lib and Schiffman couldn't do it. He's always had problems putting two sentences together, much less one. Frankly, he's a fish out of water.

Gary Sutton couldn't do baseball play-by-play if he tried. He doesn't know the game. Fact!
