"COPS" came later than "An American Family," though its original intent was to be an ongoing view of the life of police officers in Broward County, Florida. When the real-life story line went flat, then they began doing episodes of "ride-a-longs" with other cities. Even radio had a "COPS" show, a thing called "NIGHTWATCH" using audio tape recording of a night watch in a southern California town. Listening to it, though it sounds pretty authentic, it could easily have been "staged," just as some of those rerpo car and varmit hunt shows are (Note carefuly the fine print disclaimers at the end that "certain portions have been recreated.")
But our discussion is about the corporate refusal to be innovative and stay innovative, not jumping the ship the first bad book comes out. Not firing jocks because they've got a voice-tracker who will do it for half the salary.
But I seriously doubt the trend is going to be reversed in our life time.
If we have a lifetime left.
