Curious Question...

Over the weekend, I was searching for information about a station in my home market of Champaign, IL, that had been a staple in the area for many years. That station was WKIO. It was an FM classic hits/oldies station for many years, and a station here has resurrected the KIO call letters.

As I was curious about any stations that were still using the WKIO call letters, I happened to come across this website on a Google search.

http://wkionews.com

I cannot help but wonder if this is an attempt to compete with The Onion and produce news for the area. Obviously, the news is from Channel 4 and the Daily News, so it is actual, real news. There cannot be a real radio station of WKIO since the AM dial starts at 530, not 510. The people listed on the site work in Canada, which the company listed on the site is based out of.

While I hate to write about a non-radio topic on this board, it would be of help if someone has heard of this organization as I could know a little more about them. Thanks!

Appearently, the site is a companion to an "interactive thriller" novel published three years ago. Clicking on the "disclaimer" link on the site itself answers the basic questions:

Digging further, there's a website about the book, which was electronic, released chapter-by-chapter over a period of 30 days to simulate a "real-time" experience of the events in the story, and which also used fictional social media accounts (Facebook and Twitter) to further the story.
