Current Song on Star 100.7

I thought Star 100.7 wasn't going to play any more current songs. Only songs from the 80s and 90s. Well I am hearing "What Goes Around" by Justin Timberlake right now on Star 100.7. I have their stream on.

Ok was looking at the B 94 and Star 100.7 playlist on yes.com and its almost the same. Only difference Star 100.7 plays some 80s and 90s. Also "Wait For You" by Elliott Yamin was played on B 94 and then Star 100.7 just played it some minutes after about 15 or 20. How is this helping B 94 CBS Radio?

I noticed this immediately. With the exceptions of Kanye West, Timbaland, Sean Paul, T-Pain and a few other urban artists, B94's playlist is IDENTICAL to what Star plays from the year 2000 onward. With the B back, Star should no longer be playing anything from this millenium.

This morning during the 6-7:30 am morning drive, I heard the following current hits on all THREE stations (Kiss, B, and Star):

Wait For You - Elliot Yamin
Big Girls Don't Cry - Fergie
Who Knew - Pink
Over You - Daughtry

This is not helping the B at all.

In my opinion, If CBS wanted to make a good music move, either go all 70's, 80's and 90's or change to an active rock station for 100.7.

You are right, if star keeps all of the music from this millenium, the B's ratings probably aren't going to do that well.

And to me...it's just simple logical to remove the "Top 40" songs from STAR, and soon. Not in a couple of months, a week or two at best. If they are really trying to promote and push the B, get listeners off of STAR on to B94. Since STAR and B94 and sister stations, they should change STAR's line up however they see fit, 80s and 90s or a new format all together and start saying something like, "If you're looking for today's hits, tune to our sister station at 93.7." I know a good many people who listen to STAR, who would switch to B94 if STAR dropped today's music. Bizarre...

Is the X not considered an active rock station? With the quality of many of those artists what it is (i.e. crappy) do we really need more than one?

B94 has been back for a whopping 3 1/2 days, I don't think they can change everything that fast.

It makes tremendous sense for 100.7 to switch to a rock format. When 93.7 was K-Rock, it took enough of WDVE's audience away on one early summer book to drop them in a first-place tie with WDSY and KDKA.

Here's what you do-

WDVE's playlist is primarily pre-1980. The X's playlist is primarily post-1991 or the arrival of grunge (with perhaps some Metallica or Beastie Boys from a year or two before '91 making an occassional appearance, but not enough to break up the modern feel of the station).

Every summer, I see the old '80s rock bands come to Pittsburgh. The ones you make fun of. You know- say "Quiet Riot" and say "State Fair."

Only here, Quiet Riot is opening for Poison at the PG Pavillion.

Yet both WDVE and The X COMPLETELY overlook this entire decade!

Maybe I'm living in the past (although if I am, then WDVE is living even FURTHER in the past).

However, when I see 105.1 in Jacksonville with an '80s intensive playlist as a classic rock station and they are the top billing station in the market, I wonder.

When I see a bunch of 20 something hotties throw themselves at Bret Michaels on a successful cable reality show, I wonder.

When I hear bands like The Donnas, Jet, and The Darkness gaining contemporary success with similar musical styles, I wonder.

When I go to a Steelers and Penguins game and this is the music being played over the loudspeaker, I wonder. When I see these bands play larger venues in Pittsburgh than they do elsewhere, I wonder.

When I look at the amount of time I waste here writing essentially the same thing over and over in the hope some radio programmer will look at it and agree to program the Classic Headbangers Ball again, I wonder.

But base a playlist with this great era of rock- that produced what I consider to be the two greatest rock albums of all time in "Back and Black" and "Appetite For Destruction"- and then expand a bit with both songs before and after that era- the only prerequisite being that they must ROCK (I'm not interested in hearing Neil Young sing his political propaganda about Ohio or Southern Man anymore)- and I'm telling you this would work and bump WDVE out of the top spot if they did not respond.

Nobody's ever tried to do that around here since 1994. When they did- it created enough attention that it begat The X.

But speaking of "The X," what about the soundtrack of our lives in Generation X? Why can't we hear it around here?

Because we're not baby boomers and we just don't deserve it, Pratte. Come on, get with the program. ::)

OK I'm kidding....well no not really. I like this idea very much. I looked at 105.1's playlist, and I'd take out some of the Metallica/Alice in Chains, as well as some of the Hendrix and older Stones and replace it with things like Dio, Ratt, the Cult, U2 (the old stuff, obviously)...you know, the things that you thought you'd always be able to hear on DVE but had to go purchase because you realized DVE wasn't playing them anymore.

BTW Raymond, I would like your suggestion too.

Actually, I think that Double X format would die out too soon. Although, that would be a Keith Clark move, would it not? Then, he'd fire all the jocks.

Definitely make it an all inclusive Rock station and go head to head with DVE. I'd like to see those SOBs scared.

Urban AC would get mulched in this market. Not enough demo to support it.

Young Country has failed MISERABLY twice in this market.

Smooth Jazz is perfect for satellite radio. Most of the demo that would support the format are already listening to it on XM or Sirius.

A progressive rock station that could damage both DVE and the X would be tricky, but interesting.

Whatever they do they have to make sure they keep Keith's hands off of it.

Agreed, you couldn't sell an urban AC. When WJJJ was in its final incarnation, which WAS essentially an urban AC, they debated whether to pick up Tom Joyner, but in the end they decided that they couldn't sell it. Most of the business they were doing was by dancing around the urban part of the format and selling it as ann AC.

As much as I've said on this board that there's a hole for smooth jazz, it's a dead format. The record companies are no longer supporting artists in this category the way they used to, and there's nothing new to play.

There was an intersting station in Tampa for a few years called Star 95.7. It was alternative/pop, nothing really hard-edged and it was female-targeted. It went away because CC needed an Urban to help FLZ, but it did well for a while. You could morph the current Star into that pretty easily (and it would be a lot fresher than the best of the 80's).
