Currents you would play on Jack FM

Jack isn't big on playing currents, but if you programmed a Jack and it played currents, what would you play? This is not an entire list, but mine would consist of the following:

Nickelback, "Photograph"
Goo Goo Dolls, "Better Days"
Green Day, "Wake Me Up When September Ends"
Lifehouse, "You and Me"
Alanis Morissette, "Crazy"
INXS, "Pretty Vegas"
Sheryl Crow, "Good Is Good"
Bon Jovi, "Have A Nice Day"
Madonna, "Hung Up"
Melissa Etheridge, "I Run For Life"

I'm pretty much angling towards artists who have familiarity. It's also not a lot of currents either. I probably would have a maximum of 20 currents on the playlist, though. However, I definitely won't run them into the ground. Twice or thrice a day each should be sufficient.
______________

Jack FM

Kelly Clarkson's latest 2-3 hits should be on there.

I think you have to be careful not to be too aggressive with the few currents you'd play. One of the big draws of the Variety Hits format is familiarity- the Nickelback, Green Day, Lifehouse and GooGoo Dolls are pretty established (along with K.C.). If they're not stone smash hits, they don't belong.

I was thinking of putting Kelly on there, but I sometimes classify her music as teen-pop, which is what I'd want to stay away from. Maybe it's an American Idol thing since that show is extremely popular with teens. I would, however, be flexible enough to give her a second look. Definitely moreso with her than I would Britney Spears and the Backstreet Boys.

I'll go along with that. I was borderline whether or not to add the Bon Jovi, INXS and Melissa Etheridge songs. I chose to play Alanis Morissette since it was a remake of Seal's 1991 debut hit single.

if I had a jack format I whould not play any current songs, they whould all be old

Re: Jack FM

Depends on the market now, doesn't it?
If the ratings are good for Jack, no need to add currents in a market that may already have a "Mix FM" playing currents. The success of Jack may be coming from those who have chosen to escape the currents...?

If currents are a good idea, then stick with the newest stuff by classic artists...perhaps Madonna's newest one for example...?

WHTT in Buffalo seems to be doing well as a "Greatest hits" station, adding in currents by classic artists...
______________

95.7 BEN-FM/Philadelphia plays currents. The current list is as follows:

Anna Nalick -Breathe (2AM)
Green Day -Wake Me Up When September Ends
Keith Urban -You'll Think Of Me
Lifehouse -You And Me
Santana -I'm Feelin' You (w/ Michelle Branch & The Wreckers)
Nickelback -Photograph
3 Doors Down -Let Me Go
Rob Thomas -This Is How A Heart Breaks
Kelly Clarkson -Because Of You
Gwen Stefani -Cool
Howie Day -Collide
James Blunt -You're Beautiful
Goo Goo Dolls -Better Days

According to yes.com, these songs are the most played songs on BEN-FM amidst the variety of songs from the 70s through the 00s. BEN-FM, in my opinion, plays these songs in just the right rotation. While they are the most played songs on the station at the moment, they don't overplay them.
Kelly Clarkson -Behind These Hazel Eyes

Currents

K.C. Hazel Eyes should be in there, as well as Since U Been Gone (Cars' "Let's Go" ripoff, but a good one and solid pop/rock hit)

Sad to say that some of these Jack stations have several more currents than Hot AC KYSR in L.A...

Currents

So what? Does playing more currents make better radio?

Other than the Nickelback & Green Day songs, I'm not familiar with any of these. If I were programming a VH station & decided to add "currents", I'd wait until songs had peaked, maybe even gotten into older recurrent status at CHR. Just HUGE hits, instantly recognizable even (especially) by listeners who aren't necessarily "up" on what's happening these days. VH is not an "artist" format...it's a SONG format.

All very true.
