Cursing on TAM

I heard a caller say "A****le" on TAM yesterday. Can they get in any trouble for that?

Depends on context.

If you are talking about body secretions, yes.
If you say any person in 2013 that has a problem with the word is one, then no.

Oh, come on, girls. There are much saltier words many people use in everyday conversation. And if the station is broadcasting, imagine this, a real conversation, then you could expect a few expletives of varying quality to be included when listeners and guests get excited. I'd say the word "Asshole" is an insult, but I'd hardly consider the word "obscene." Especially for Cleveland, which has long been one of the least genteel radio markets in the country.

...and if the station is broadcasting a "real conversation", one in a position of authority would think use of the delay is more than just a nice suggestion. Stay classy, Cleveland.

I'm thinking of petitioning the FCC to allow cursing on the AM band. Since no one under 50 listens to it, there's no chance of a child having his or her entire life corrupted by a naughty word. I'm being facetious of course, but maybe allowing more freedom on the AM band could generate interest in it once more.

Must've been a real a-hole at the controls, not to engage the hot button for that word!

"Stay classy, Cleveland?" Cleveland radio, including the days of WWWE and before x, was probably some of the "least classy" or restrained radio in the country. I was raised on Detroit radio and TV, and was often taken aback by some of the crassness that came out of the airwaves of Cleveland stations. Not that I'm a fan, or even tolerant, of a lot incendiary blather that some stations call "hot talk." But the real obscenity is not an occasional expletive word, but, as I see it, the rich fat white dudes who are paid a lot to rile up lower middle class white dudes to blame everyone else for why their lot in life, and to prop up their corporate masters by dividing people against one another and making fun of people less fortunate than themselves. And the people in charge of things at outfits like Clear Channel and Salem and Cumulus etc etc etc who are responsible for making the radio industry into an irrelevant dustbin of one-sided "outrage."

So I guess the "asshole" is in the eye of the beholder, and where you're looking from!

I have to agree with Goldilocks94941. It's OK for the likes of Rush Limpb***s to use words such as "b*** jobs" and "BJ's" on the air (and he wasn't talking about the membership store), he was talking about Bill and Monica. This was some years ago, but several years after that "affair", maybe 2004, when Rusho referred to it and the "acts" performed. Guess it's OK when Rush says it when kids may be listening or someone may be offended, but OMG, if a DJ or announcer slips up and uses those terms or makes a joke with them, it's FCC time! And more recently Rusho also said more filthy words that the average citizen or DJ would not be allowed to broadcast, I forgot what it was. I'm not for censorship, just pointing out it depends on who you are with what you can say on the airwaves without you or the station/network getting into trouble. And just to put this in perspective, I listen to WTAM ONLY for top-of-the-hour news, especially if I'm in the car and want weather/traffic reports. That one day, I tuned in maybe a minute too late to try to catch the weather, and here was Rush talking about Monica and Bill and BJ's. I make it a habit NOT to listen to these right wing "holier than thou" corporate talking heads.

I hear this everywhere, not just on TAM - when someone says a$$hole, the "a$$" part is aired but "hole" is bleeped. Why is "hole" a dirty word and "a$$" is not?

It's the combination of the two words that creates the one really bad word. I like to say "explitive deleted hole", because it sounds funny.

I would take issue with lumping Salem Communications into a bad view of Conservative talk radio. Most of their talkers are on the more intellectual side of things. Bill Bennett in morning drive is quite, even too, low key. Dennis Prager (12:06pm - 3pm) has an intellectually rewarding talk show. He states his case clearly and invites you to think about the issues. He is, hands down, the best thing going in talk radio today (imo). Then from 3:05 until 6pm, we get "The Michael Medved Show". Whereas others often talk to people who already agree with them, Michael relishes the opportunity to put those who disagree with him on the air. He even has his official "Disagreement Days"! This makes for exciting and compelling radio. These talk show hosts represent Conservatism very well and I am glad to be able to listen to them.

I love the revisionist history on this board as if conservative talkers are the only ones who ever swear. I am sure my post will get moved to take this outside but liberal talk shows are no better as I mentioned in a previous post take a listen to Mike Malloy sometime and the hate, filth and downright anger that spews from his mouth and he is far from the only one on that side.

Not sure what the issue is here; if you flip over to the FM dial, you hear more "A-bombs" during the Lanigan & Malone show (especially during the popular "Knuckleheads in the News" segment) than this... I no longer live in the Cleveland area, but still pull up WMJI via their webstream every Thursday morning for "Knuckleheads." Hoping the rest of the gang keeps the show going even after Lanigan retires (supposedly at the end of this year, from what I saw on another thread).

But even the most gentlemanly Bill Bennett used the term 'screwed' this morning. As in Under Obamacare we're screwed.

Which may explain why they--and other Salem talk stations around the country who carry this lineup--have almost no ratings.

To be a hit today on talk radio, you have to throw a lot a red meat, demonize your opposition, make a bunch of blanket statements about every issue, and have amnesia about similar behavior of your own party when they were in office!

Dennis Prager is a complete sleeper feature. About as exciting as twin beds. ::) As for the so-called cursing, back in the 90's, Detective Sipowicz said "asshole" many times on a great TV show called NYPD Blue.
