Curt Gowdy passed away....

G

GLICKNICK

Guest
According to WBZ Radio, Curt passed away today from leukemia.
Curt truly was a broadcasting legend.

Besides being perhaps the best play-by-play sportscaster who ever lived (and certainly the most versatile), Curt Gowdy also owned several radio stations. At one point, he owned WCCM-800 (now WNNW) and WCGY-93.7 (now WMKK).

And two of his children went on to work in the industry: daughter Cheryl for years worked at WCCM/WCGY, while son Curt Jr. became a top television sports producer.

"Hi, Neighbor. Have A Gansett"- Red Sox Should Rename The TV Press Box At Fenway: "The Curt Cowdy Press Box"

Lucky to grow up in a time when Curt Gowdy was the voice of the Red Sox.
Hope The Red Sox will rename the Radio/TV Press Box at Fenway PArk: "The Curt Cowdy Press Center."
R.I.P. Curt Gowdy.

I wonder how many listeners (and viewers) remember the commercials Curt did during the 60s, 70s and 80s. After reading Curt's obit earlier today, I got an instant flashback to one TV commercial which began:

"HI THIS IS CURT GOWDY AT HOWDY'S!" [HOWDY'S was a fast food chain from the 60s to early 70s and Curt did on-camera work....as well as voiced...their spots].

Terraplane has a great idea.

Indeed, the TV and radio booths at Fenway should be re-named in Curt Gowdy's memory.

During the mid-1960's, just before Gowdy left Boston to go fulltime to the network, I believe that besides Narragansett Beer (who may have still held the broadcast rights to the Sox), Red Sox broadcasts were also sponsored by Atlantic Gasoline and White Owl Cigars.

Gimmmeee uh Narrrrryy....

Narragansett spent a fortune promoting the phrase: "Hi neighbor - have a 'Gansett" and, in much of New England failed miserably. Try as they would
to develop an even mildly upscale image, Narragansett remained a workingman's
beer.

In bars all over the region the call was "Gimme a Narrrry" or, in a more perfect representation, "Gimme a f***in Narrrry".

The only beer more working class was Old Tap Bohemian, brewed in Fall River. They had the smarts to call it just "BOH". It was a wonder at causing gastric distress! The only way Narragansett was able to overcome it was by buying it out and closing it down!

a humorous Curt Gowdy anecdote

Wish Curt had the WEEI airwaves to announce on. He was tremendous.

If I recall, Harvey Wharfield's son, Little Bill, saw Curt Gowdy at
the WCGY office and said "Hey, you're the guy from the Naked Gun movie."

Out of the mouths of babes...'course little Bill is maybe mid 20's today,
that was back in 1991 or so when he was probably 11

also,
condolences to ex-WCGY Deb Scott Cowsill - Bill Cowsill's passing was
announced at Barry Cowsill's memorial on Saturday night in Rhode Island

Her brother-in-law (Bill) along with her husband (Barry). That's rough.

You can find Debby's e mail if you Google COWSILLS. Please send her a note if you know her - she's a great gal.

Paul Sullivan was talking with Dan Roche about this; they also mentioned
his son Trevor (WCCM/WCGY). I remember when Cheryl Ann was at 'CGY.

I was only 4 when he stopped doing Red Sox games so I don't quite remember that but I do remember Sat. afternoon baseball game of the week CG did along
with Tony Kubek. It's said he is in THREE sports halls of fame,
Baseball, Football, Basketball.<P ID="signature">______________

not much I can add but...

... one of the best ever. I grew up with Curt and he made it sound so easy. There wasn't hyperbole, it didn't sound like hot air--it was a friendly, conversational style.

Re: Gimmmeee uh Narrrrryy....

My dad preferred Narragansett Ale, which was difficult to find and was in cans that looked almost exactly like the beer.

The cartoon TV commercials for the beer were great.

The one I remember was the old biddy having a beer and a hot babe comes in and orders a Narragansett and the old coot bartender sharpens up and gives her his best Barry White voice to say "Hi neighbor..."

Then the old biddy, says, "Bartender...are you making fun of me?"

To which he replys, "No...I was making fun of HER!"

He was a BORING BORING idiot.
Always afraid to say an umpire was wrong.
Went along to get along...

This made the news in Florida, too

I was in southern Florida the day he died. First heard about it on some tv sportscast, which mentioned his Sox and Yankee broadcast days, but focused more on his fishing shows.

I can remember him doing games in the 70's. I was just a kid, but his voice and delivery style stuck with me.

Re: This made the news in Florida, too

Curt's home was in Florida. I believe Cheryl Ann lives there.
Trevor probably lives in Boston, Curt Jr. in New York.

Cheryl Ann and Trevor were both station managers of WCGY.

Did they sell WCCM?

What were the other 2 stations up here that Gowdy owned?

Yes, WCCM is owned by Costa-Eagle and has moved to 1490 AM in Haverhill (the old WHAV-AM).

800 AM in Lawrence which used to be WCCM is now Spanish WNNW, also owned by Costa-Eagle.

Re: WHO CARES???

You know, this post is going to stay up so I can comment on what a STUPID remark that is. Gowdy, and what makes others like him so great is that he knew how to impartially call a game on radio without screaming that the ump is wrong or the batter was wrong...

The power of words spoken without bias. You can't and don't find that much these days.

And, you're going to tell us that you were around when Gowdy was calling Red Sox games? You know how long ago that was?

In today's "sports" concept you're right.

Gowdy represented what baseball was in his day. A game played for the sake
of the game, not for the sake of the individual overstuffed ego.

Baseball, basketball, football....as played today....they're NOT sports;
they're entertainment of the crudest form and should no longer be exempt
from the rules that govern other businesses.

The kind of "sportscaster" to which you allude, one who takes sides,
cheerleads and denigrates legitimate authority would have been thought of
as a horse's a$$ and would have driven listeners away.

BTW, from a board-operator's viewpoint, Gowdy was a dream to work "with".
He knew the cues and used them. It was hard to screw up a Red Sox
broadcast with him doing the call. Y'had to totally ignore him to get
the breaks wrong and, though that may be the norm today, it would get
you fired real fast back then.
