Curtains For FM News 101.1?

Newsradio 780 owns the Chicago news market.

Great stations can be had. WEBN Cincinnati's Rock station for decades has been passed by WFTK.

My advise to WBBM: Never ever allow your product to get stale. 101.1 may or may not gain traction, but some body will sooner or later catch "revenue envy" and make a run at WBBM especially if WBBM "rests on their laurels."

If WBBM can be had, it won't be FM 101.1 that does it.

And 96rock had a strong start out of the gate and has been gaining traction since. It was only a matter of time before they took WEBN down. Sad to see an iconic rock station has fallen to these depths. The only way I see WIQI gaining any traction is if they flip to Talk.

96 Rock has tried on and off to topple WEBN for 30 years. Their victory has as much to do with WEBN cutting the heart and soul out of the body and expecting it to still dance. If CC still put a competitive rock format back on WEBN, it would be in the top five consistently.

WBBM has the same heritage in Chicago News as WEBN had in Cincinnati's Rock. They too, can fall.

I think Venture/Merlin is proving Alternative in Chicago can be done well with Q87.7. Bring that back to 101.1. Throw Jazz back on 87.7. Throw WIQI FM News in the dumpster. Few times in my life have I heard something worse on the FM dial.

Want further proof? WKQX-LP 87.7 is actually playing BETTER (if you can imagine) music than WRFF in Philly. WRFF snagged a 5.0. http://www.radio-info.com/markets/philadelphia

The only thing missing from Q87.7 is entertaining personalities to go with the GREAT format they have now. Then move it to 101.1 since it has a better signal and is available on more radios, promote, and you'll do very well.

Isn't WBBM like KCBS in SFO and its that they are the top rated all-News stations in their markets. I know KCBS is beating cumulus "News and Information" KGO right now and KCBS is neck to neck with NPR Station KQED-FM. But I know WBBM is Neck to neck with WGN-AM for the top spots in Chicago. Didn't WBBM in the 1990's competed against WMAQ for all news in the market but WBBM's ratings killed off WMAQ 670. I know in the 1970's WBBM also competed against WIND 560 in the early 1980's for news and in the 1970's against WNIS (NBC all-News Network) and WNUS.

I know in SFO KCBS did have challenges like Competing against KNAI in the 1970's for all-news and in the 1990's compete against KPIX 95.7. But the Group W takeover of CBS killed off KPIX 95.7.

The only time WMAQ beat WBBM in the all news ratings was during the Gulf War. WMAQ carried the CNN feed and that really helped them.

Thats when CNN was really all-news. Today CNN and HLN are out of the radio business and now these networks are criticized for bowing down to TMZ. CNN Back in 1991 was more like USA Today.

You're right. At that time people were glued to Gulf War updates and WMAQ had them.

Is that what led to the demise of WMAQ. Both stations were owned by CBS IIRC. Too much competition for WBBM, so WMAQ was turned into sports (WSCR).

That was part of it. The other part was that CBS had to drop one of their Chicago stations. 1160 was the obvious choice to be sold and 670 was the perfect place to move WSCR.

It was like KFWB in LA. 980 AM had lower ratings in the LA books for all-news and 1070 KNX attracted more of the LA audience for all news since 1070 is a 50kw for LA and KFWB only has 5000 watts in its transmitter. Incidentally CBS did own KFWB from 1995-2011 when 980 went to a trust. KNX has been owned by CBS since the 1930's.

Look at 670 WMAQ radio it uses the WINS theme. Who did WMAQ Targeted in the Chicago Market over the WBBM. Which all-newser was based on Chicago Tribune and which one resembled the Sun Times? I know in NYC WCBS targets the NYC Suburban Audience and resembles the NY times. I know in NYC too WINS is like NY Post and targeted the boroughs.

Didn't KFWB at one time have a greater audience than KNX?

I knew when Group W had KFWB they did have a larger audience than KNX in the 1970's.
