curtis in Raleigh

Is anyone aware of the key departures at Curtis Media in Raleigh? Bus. Mgr. leaving or already gone...HR Mgr. leaving...WPTF morning host and PD leaving...I wonder if something is about to break open. There's word on the street that their hispanic station actually empoyees a morning show comprised of illegal aliens. Wouldn't that be a good news-talk story

I think there are two issues at work here!

One, Kevin thinks the grass is greener working for Cumulus in Nashville. Maybe, maybe not! Doubt it had anything to do with the departure of business office folks.

Now, the Spanish thing is real interesting. Why not turn them in to the FCC and the INS?

Just have a jacket made up with I N S on it. Stop by for a visit and tour of the station and see if anyone leaves in a hurry.

Hell, just an old white van with BLUE INS letters on it. Would look like the crowd leaving a Wake Forest Football game in the 3rd Quarter! :~) (with apologies to my friends at WFU)!

I don't work at Curtis and don't know about the things SLOGAN posted up top. But according to some friends there morale is high and it is a great place to work compared to others in town. And no one is worried about Miller's leaving. We'll see I guess.

Worried? Heh, no we're not worried...closer to the truth we're celebrating. ;D

Bingyd2 obviously has inside info and it's rare to loose a PD and morning man and be happy. "Don't worry be happy". That being the case, give us the real deal on the illegals doing mornings.

Having dealt with Kevin, I can understand why some folks at WPTF are glad to see him go. Like most of us who are or have been in radio, he has a bit of an ego, is self promoting, and believes the axis of the world runs through his butt! But then, it takes that kind of attitude to be successful in most places in the radio business.

Who's next, LuMaye? 'Cause I hear he isn't too popular in the building since he talks about illegals all the time. And why isn't Steele the new PD?

Can't! LaLey is kind of a island to itself. Don't know much about the air staff there. Sorry.

I don't know who Bing is, but they are right. Most of us who have had to work with Kevin are not sad to see him go. He's an okay host, but I think people have gotten tired of his yelling at people. Even the smallest mistake would cause him to start yelling, unless the mistake was made by someone who sucked up to him. Honestly, I think the people above Kevin had had enough and that something would have happened, even if he hadn't got the Nashville job. Hopefully, we'll get someone who doesn't expect everyone to be as perfect as he is.

I was working at WPTF when Kevin came to the station. On my first day there, I realized that me and others on the morning show had a limited future under his so-called "leadership." I quit after he got pissed-off at me over something I no control over. The other five voices on the morning show--two hosts, the other news anchor, the traffic reporter and the AccuWeather anchor--were all gone in weeks!
I'm not sad to see Kevin leave--in fact, that could be the best thing in the world to happen to WPTF just short of Curtis selling the station to a company that would pull their head out of the sand and pay attention to detail. In my opinion, WPTF sounds about as bad as it ever has in its history! That's a damn shame. Maybe with a new program director and morning host, things might improve for those folks still working there and for the audience!

Don't know about working with Kevin, but since when is it a bad thing to expect perfection, or at least to expect everyone to strive for excellence? Sounds like some folks got rubbed the wrong way by a manager who was doing his job. And, no offense, but the morning show before Kevin took over was just awful.

Expecting perfection is not a bad thing, I expect from it from myself personally. Kevin's demands were unreasonable for anybody. It was less about expecting perfection and more about being expected to read his mind and decipher his (always changing) moods. If he didn't like you personally....it didnt matter what kind of job you did....you were gone...and no I wasn't fired this isn't "sour grapes". He'd throw his mother under the bus to hear his name on TV, for strictly personal glory reasons. Bottom line...his loyalty was to him and not the station and I have never worked with a more unproffesional person in my life.

Just remember, XTalker, and no offense to those of us who are older, but highly rated doesn't count if your entire audience is over 60. If I were a betting person, that was probably the case with the previous morning show. And Kevin seemed to be in plenty of demand to do on-air endorsements. If the show were not a success, it wouldn't have lasted this long.

And Bing, getting on TV is what any good talk show host does best. Sure it promotes the host, but it also puts the station name in front of hundreds of thousands of people, if not more. I'm not sure there is any better free promotion out there, and since I haven't seen any WPTF billboards lately, except for some ugly yellow ones I saw in Johnston County, my guess is that the station isn't getting much outside marketing other than Kevin's appearances.

I will say this...Kevin is very good at calling the spotlight to himself. The problem is once it gets there he's got nothing to show. Have you ever seen any of his many TV appearances? He get's his ass handed to him and looks completely lost. He just speaks in soundbites and repeats what he hears elsewhere. If you spend all your time getting yourself on TV maybe you could carve out a hour or two for some research on the subject?? Especially, when you are shows with a panel of experts on the subject. Yeah, it gets PTF some national exposure......and maybe some national pity! As far as his ratings...they weren't great, but they didn't plummet either.....just kind ehhh. Bottom line...you will never know the true Kevin until you work for him, otherwise he has an incredibly well constructed smokescreen. I'm just glad he's gone and looking forward to what PTF has up its sleeve from here on out.

Interesting how a question about people leaving and illegals working at Curtis turns into a throw Kevin under the bus free for all. I'm familiar with the on air product..for my money it was much much better than the previous show, and I'm pretty certain the ratings were better. The point of no outside promotion for the station is a good one.
If you don't like yellers...how does anyone work with Maisano..I'm surprised he hasn't been suspended or caught up in a lawsuit, not to mention how Zachary berates people.
I've been there and have moved across the street where it's sooooo much better.
