Curtis Media upcoming Olides outlet(s)

 Could CMG be about to start simulcast of the new Channel 85? Or could it be simulcast of the Oldies and Beach station in Burlington, WPCM? Some are betting the current Oldies format on either station could show up on WCOG AND/OR WMFR (a veritbale black hole for CMG by the way) Just speculating the time frame, but could happen as early as July 4th, or Labor Day. Watch it happen! 8)

Could the two WSJS-AM stations in Winston-Salem be going Oldies or will Oldies appear on WZTK-FM 101.1??????????

Give it up Good Times. WSJS was advertising on WXII this evening and doesn't look like Oldies anytime soon. And, WZTK still has plenty of interesting Talk and doesn't show any signs of making a change.

WSJS will not be going oldies any time soon at all. I don't think WZTK will either - both are making money, though my AM radio in my vehicle is so bad, it's actually far easier to listen to WSJS on my Blackberry than on AM...

I have no idea what Curtis have planned for the station formerly known as Radio Disney and under the WCOG call letters. Now if WMFR is bleeding cash then it may well be wise to share even more programming with WSJS and have more opt outs. A lovely simulcast with WCOG, and WPCM with tweaked programming may well work nicely. No point WMFR repeating WCOG as that station covers High Point nicely in the day.

I have a gripe about WSJS though... you guys seem to forget Burlington!!! Any traffic news always mentions Winston-Salem and Greensboro, but doesn't mention any problems Burlington way despite the fact that WSML is located that way.

Oldies stations don't make money. Going the way of the blacksmith.

Classic Hits and Adult Hits are the money making gold formats.

...."olides"?...ok, i'll play:
1. "oldies don't Make Money".
essentially, they ARE money.
that's AARP throwing
down on the grandchildren.
2. yes, it's the iCarly crowd who
Wants, but it's the AARP who
Spends. "she won't like it now,
but when she grows up, she'll
cherish it." yeah, Grandma.
3. "don't care about the color of
your hair...just the green in
your jeans". old song.
really really old song.

Traffic problems in Burlington??? Come now, that`s like saying that there is bumper-to-bumper traffic in Mebane! Did the old famers cows get loose again??? Great area down there, but not a busy metro (thank God).

Oldies and classic hits (pop) are the same thing. Classic hits is just re-branding oldies.

For the most part that is true. But, there are still many traditional "Oldies" stations around, and
and WKIX-AM 850 is one of them.

Many Classic Hits stations (WRVA as an example) don't play R&B either, so there's a difference within that moniker, too.

40 gets backed up a lot with accidents.

I don't know precisely where he was, but the editor of the local paper was writing about taking a trip to Raleigh and he turned on the radio and heard "In the Still of the Night" by the Five Satins and liked the lyrics. He may still have been close to home, where we have a station that occasionally goes back that far. I can't remember whether it's True Oldies Channel, but last I heard it was ABC.

WRVA-FM, IMHO, is classic rock lite. That's the thing... classic hits can be divided into two categories; CR lite and Pop Hits (ne Oldies), with crossover.

FM classic hits, depending on market, can still skew pre-63. WMJI/Cleveland, still a revenue powerhouse (and Top 3 25-54 PPM) will go as "old" as '62, yet play Queen, Frampton, Allmans, and Springsteen (made big in the midwest by sister station WMMS). All depends on market.

As for "traditional" oldies (56-79), there's many stations out there. Some on FM. With PPM being oldies friendly you're seeing more stations flipping to...whatever you want to call it. Oldies... Classic hits. Whatever.

Here in Akron, at legendary WAKR (1940 sign on) we're 56-74. But only play 56-63 once per hour. Maybe twice if a backtimer is needed to top or bottom news as the earlier songs are short. Core is 64-68 titles.

AM Oldies has strength with it's P1s and P2s as well. We were instrumental in a sellout for "The Golden Boys" with Frankie Avalon, Fabian and Bobby Rydell. We're now presenting The Ultimate Doo Wop Show with Dion, Shirelles and Flamingos. Shows are selling out. Boomers have expendable cash.

Thanks for proving my point.... Many great Oldies stations still do great!!! They can be big money makers if programmed right with a big playlist and good local talent.

While Burlington and Graham do not have the traffic problems you find in Raleigh or Greensboro they do have occasional problems. And when Farmer Brown's cows do get loose it causes tie-ups, and even the local area TV stations get into the act. But I think the point you are missing is if you're going to operate a 10 KW station in an area, you have an obligation to serve it. I know this is a quaint old 20th century idea. Maybe when some of those Alamance County listeners do receive a ratings diary, it will give them a reason to listen to radio rather than sitting there with their i-pod entertaining them.

WBAG is all they need! ;)

I'll add this.... Tom Kent's show was a dog on WTRG. Moved from nights to overnights due to poor numbers til we could cancel it.

I like Tom. I know Tom. He lives about 20min up the road from where I'm at.

He does a great job. Show just didn't fly in the Triangle.

If it didn't fly on a 100kw flame thrower I'm sure it's not doing well on Y102. I just read the show was signed for WKIX-AM as well. Bad move. I realize the show is on due to lack of monies for live talent... but don't make Y102 "The TK Station".... too much.

I personally agree that Mike Harvey`s National Show is better than Tom Kent`s. By the way, is Tom back living in North Carolina? He had a better national Oldies show on the "TK" network until about 3 years ago, when hesplit with that production company and they had a new host. The old show was "Tom Kent`s Party In THe Basement" iun which he always said that it was coming from his basement in Cleveland, Ohio. Is he back in North Carolina? He is orginally from Winston-Salem. Could he end up LIVE on a local Triad station, maybe even programming it? I think that his show does do well in some markets, but Mike Harvey is still better....

Tom Kent...

I just read the show was signed for WKIX-AM as well.

That's a mistake. Not on the AM. Tom's been on Y102.9 for about three years.
