Cutbacks at KCSM

Pete Fallico announced on Facebook that this coming Wednesday nite, the last of his "Doodlin' Lounge" shows will air at 9. Not clear if they are eliminating all the 9pm shows, or if he is leaving the station, or what's happening.

...but on the other hand... the station is bringing BACK Ron Pelletier's "Jazz from Gallery 41" (a casualty of the late-night purge of 2017) and putting it in the Sat nite 10p-to-2a slot. Curiouser and curiouser .

The station is in Pledge Drive mode as of Friday. They're back to having a $300G goal; not clear how long the drive is supposed to last, or if they're just going to go until they make the target.

Per a post on their FB page, KCSM has changes coming in a few weeks. Jesse "Chuy" Varela and Chris Cortez are now co-Program Directors. They have finalized the new "Morning Cup of Jazz" sked: Jayn Pettingill Mon/Tue/Wed and Keith Hines Thur/Fri/Sat.

Sunday is being revamped. "Breakfast Dance & BBQ" cut back to an hour (6a-7a), followed by "Rhythm Retrospective" (7-8), "Annals of Jazz" (8-9) and "I'm Talkin' Jazz" (9-10). Clifford Brown Jr will host a 2-hr "Midday Jazz" (10-noon) and his usual "Jazz Countdown" (noon-2). Jesse's Latin jazz show remains from 2-6, to be followed by a new World Music show hosted by Maria Marquez. Harry Duncan's "Soul Kitchen" remains from (8-10) and the canned Chicago hosts remain in the 10p-6a slots.

Apparently Alisa Clancy (who retired from KCSM last summer) has been doing fill-in newsreader shifts at KCBS since December. Meanwhile her husband Clint Baker had heart surgery, also in Dec -- something have I not once heard mentioned on KCSM, even tho' they still run his "Breakfast Dance & BBQ" show on Sun mornings.

Keep in mind that health related issues are covered by privacy legislation and that, generally, a station will not mention such matters unless the employee specifically wishes their audience to follow their illness or condition.

At most, a station might mention an employee is on a "leave of absence" but even then it brings to the forefront legal issues.

Well, OK, good point. Tho' Clancy has posted about Baker's condition on Facebook. I'm assuming the Sunday morning shows of his that we've been hearing have been reruns.

It was a very low-key farewell. Carl "Sonny" Leyland of "Rhythm Retrospective" is also leaving, they are revamping Sunday Mornings for the 2nd time in less than a year.
And Mr Leyland did his last show this morning -- he said he was leaving because they asked him to take "a significant pay cut" -- which of course is not what the station said in their announcement last week (and not the first time they have been less-than-forthcoming with facts :) ). Good luck to Sonny in the future.

Weirdness this morning: at 8am they were running Harry Duncan's Sun NIGHT show "In the Soul Kitchen". That went on until shortly before 9, when we got five minutes of station IDs and the opening intros to several other incorrect shows (Clint Baker, Maria Marquez) and then finally the right 9am show began. Oddly, Spinitron was listing Richard Hadlock's playlist between 8 and 9, even though Harry Duncan was being broadcast.

Sounds like an automation "oops," especially with the back-to-back IDs and show opens. As if the interstitial production was part of the playlist, but many of the shows themselves were not in the system.

Tuned in to "Crazy 'Bout the Blues" last nite, figuring Ms. Lawton would be doing some sort of Buddy Guy birthday tribute, but instead they repeated last Friday's show, replete with multiple plugs for "tomorrow's" Jazz on the Hill, which happened last Saturday. Oopsies.
