Cuts At CBS Boston?

R&R hinted that cuts were soon expected at CBS Boston. CBS has recently been on a Clear Channelesque chopping spree in other markets. Any word if that's true?

Patrick Callahan is gone from WODS's website, and JJ Wright is on the air right now.

That's a shame if Patrick's gone, IMO. He was very good. I've also enjoyed listening to JJ for many years and I've always thought he deserved much better than overnights, but it's unfortunate if this is at Patrick's expense.

At least they had JJ continue their Thursday "Top 20 Countdown" feature tonight, which I enjoy, but I always felt like it was Patrick's feature.

I haven't heard overnights on WODS this week. Is there a DJ, or is it just music? Is that where a hosted airshift (and salary) was eliminated?

There are also two weekenders missing from WODS's bio page.

Judy Pancoast, Steve York, Scott Roberts, and Mike O'Reilly are still listed.

Jay Gordon (of the Sunday morning Elvis Only show) is missing as is Norm Thibeault.

They finally deleted Pete Falconi's bio three weeks after the fact.

And BostonRadioWatch.com has the old news that ODS's morning comedy guy Jimmy Del Ponte was let go as well.

Sunday morning update: The "Elvis Only" show just aired so, while Jay Gordon's bio is gone from ODS's website, he and the show remain. And WODS is still listed as an affiliate on ElvisOnly.com.

"Beatle Brunch" stays and is airing right now.

JJ Wright hosted (on tape) Sat mornings former "Patrick Callahan Weekly Top 20" show.

Judy Pancoast and Mike O'Reilly hosted during the day Saturday. Mighty Mike and the Sat night 70s show are still with us. And Casey Kasem and the AT40/70s aired last night as usual; however, it was a full 3 hours and 40 songs rather than the usual condensed Top 26 songs in 2 hours.

I dont think anyone hosted the overnight hours last night...not sure about during the week.

Harry "Bud" Nelson is on now this morning following Beatles Brunch and he is "dedicating the show to the late Jess Cain who died earlier this week."

WODS has updated their website with the new lineup, showing JJ Wright on from 6-9 PM. It looks like overnights might have been eliminated after Mike Finegan at 1 AM... I wonder if they'll even voicetrack anyone in that slot? It's been the trend in Providence for the past few years to cut the live hosts first, then go with voicetracking, and then get rid of the voicetracking. I wonder what ODS will do?

According to a friend/colleague, the overnight shift is automated, but not voicetracked--that would be a union violation. All the other large broadcasting corporations have already trimmed everything possible and then some, so now it's CBS's turn to jump on the "chopping spree" bandwagon.

Steve York had the Sunday afternoon shift which is/was usually held down by weekday morning traffic reporter Mauzy Stafford.

Barry Scott and the Lost 45s are now on as usual and he will be followed by the Wolfman Jack thing which lasts until 1am.

JJ Wright USED to come on after that but, as we now know, he's now on the 6pm-9pm shift.

I wonder if he misses the graveyard. He'd probably take it back if it would bring Patrick back.

JJ?

So that means that it's nothing but liners and jingles? Strange that the union would be more happy with that, than with someone voicetracking. Does anyone know if WZLX and WBMX have also eliminated overnights?

ZLX still has overnights

But for how long? With the other stations in the building without, forces one to say, "Hmmmmm."

Maybe they'll want to keep one live person on duty on the premesis overnights, and figure that it might as well be someone who is doing an airshift...

now I have no inside knowledge about this, and this is complete conjecture on my part...but if I were to guess, I'd bet they'd just put in a rotation of part timers on the overnights...cheap way to cut costs and still run efficiently, and still have live overnights.

OK I assume all the stations are in the same building now right? WBZ, ZLX, BCN, BMX.... so they are live on the AM side, they just have the board op for the AM overnight watch over the automation on the FM side.

I for one will miss JJ on my ride to work. Although I do listen to Al Cole too and I would miss him if he went away... without the local jocks I might as well turn the XM on.

No, WBMX is still in their own building, and WBZ is with WBZ-TV.

Ive never been a big fan of JJ Wright and I enjoyed listening to Patrick Callahan. We listen Oldires 103 quite a bit at work.
