Cuts at WAAF

so it seems as if Bob Hannah the night guy is out at WAAF. No longer on the website and they have liners running that say "all rock and no talk"....eek

Great...so they are saving a few bucks by automating 7PM-6AM??? And just how much did they spend on that idiotic transmitter move a couple of years ago??? You've got to love the priorities of some of the suits these days...However...I am sure that who ever was responsible for that transmitter move is still employed...
unbelievable...

Following the formula at sister "Mike FM" across the hall. No jocks, but still gets ratings.
And just like "Mike FM ", WAAF is going down into the dumpster ( Mike/Waaf ratings are not all that great ) .

You have got to ingnore the published numbers you see. 12+ numbers are pretty much meaningless in the grand scheme of things. Both AAF and Mike do very well in demo.

Something seems odd with this; If WAAF needs to make budget cuts, how can they afford to do these "bailout" contests & give away 3 grand a day for a week?

I'm guessing that the contest money might come from Entercom national corporate to promote their stations, but the station payroll and budget comes from their own local station accounts.

On-air contesting to draw audience impressions is far more important than a jock's salary.

AMEN! Radio is no longer a "people" business.

Since what's been cutting into radio's numbers -- especially in the sellable demographics -- are the soulless mp3 player and nearly soulless (about 90 percent VT'ed) Sirius XM, why should radio put ANYBODY on the air live anymore? Seems to me the demo Madison Avenue worships wants only tunes they like, with no human intervention and as few commercials as possible. If radio is losing ears to this competition with 18 minutes of spots an hour and DJs talking over every intro and making mindless small talk about American Idol when the music stops, how does keeping all dayparts "live," or doing anything that doesn't involve nearly uninterrupted, focus-group-tested, label-pushed hit music, help the situation?

I'm in my 50s and loved personality radio, but I'm afraid that ship has sailed.

I saw that Hannah had been let go, and hoped it was an isolated thing. But, we also cut our night jock as well.

It's happening in a lot of places as the downsizing due to economical stress hits radio as well.

What's more disturbing is the new CC initiative. "Redistributing" their host content into whichever market wants them. This is going to choke a lot of smaller market personalities out of a gig.

Even scarier...the asinine notion of things like voice-tracked afternoon drivetime in LA.

It's going to take a meltdown @ Seabrook/Sept. 11th-type tragedy to once-again reinforce the need for live, local, immediate response media.

Who's gonna read the news when it's all automated?

Here's an analogy: You could Tivo tonight's B's/Canadiens game. Or the Presidential presser...but you don't. Because live, unscripted "drama" is interesting to watch.

Same with radio. What's the point of listening to a show that was taped 3 days ago? It's as silly as reading news that's 36 hours old. Radio is immediate. And voicetracking kills the biggest advantage we have over all other outlets. INCLUDING the internet.

We don't have to upload, or get throttled due to net congestion.

Except when the network crashes. And the tracks get lost.

I would like to know what they pay that hack Hillman.
He's always bragging that he's being payed "handsomely" and
never shuts up about his house in Maine.

Yeah, that's the ticket. Be a f*n iPod with commercials. That's going to do real well long term.

Radio is going to die if all it has to offer is what an MP3 player can with commercials. We need to come up with new, compelling content that gives people you-can't-get-this-anywhere-else feeling. That costs money, so we don't bother and we're going down the tubes.

On the plus side, TV is next.
