Cuts at WMC-TV

WREC’s Mike Fleming is reporting that the axe has fallen at WMC-TV. Among those sent to The Beach, he says, include morning anchor Bill Lunn and nighttime co-anchor, Donna Davis (who I see at the Schnucks on Forest Hill-Irene all the time). Fleming says his sources, who still work in the building, say more cuts are coming.

As I type, the 5pm newscast is on. Joe, who is thought untouchable at 1960 Union, is on-air solo. The same protected-status goes for venerable Dave Brown.

Dave Cera, too. There had been a report that Tim Van Horn was gone, but he was still on the website as of an hour ago, while the others were gone.

Did they have to save a lot of that money to pay Andy Wise?
They've had him on payroll for quite some time.
Isn't he supposed to start in january On-Air?
I figure Joe and Dave are making some serious cash...
But were Donna and Bill Lunn?

I think it is safe to assume that Tim -- who pops up here, periodically and is a fun guy -- is safe. He is on-air as I type doing a stand-up for the food drive.

The Commercial Appeal, a media outlet not unfamiliar with staffing cutbacks -- has a story about the cuts in today's edition. It really doesn't add much to what we have already read, but here is the link for those inclined to read it:

We thankfully haven't heard much about radio cutbacks this Holiday Season. Does this mean that radio has been spared, or does it mean there aren't any more people to cut?

Memphis radio staffs are already pretty thin, but I would expect to see some folks dropped anyway around the 15th. I know one operation where there isn't a single person on the air side of the building during certain times of the day. I would think that's the case with most of them.

I predict that the entire news department at WPTY will be gutted by the end of 09 and the ABC affiliate will no longer offer any local news.

skip is still there for now. when they move to a new building who knows?

Anybody besides me notice WMC's weather isn't very accurate?? I guess there close most of the time.. The not giving a rain percentage irks me..I could say it it might rain today and be close to right 50% of the time... ;D
