Cuts in KTRH's News Dept?

Too bad. KTRH doesn't have much news staff to cut, although it refers to itself as "Houston’s heritage news radio station". Although this may seem incorrect, the definition of 'heritage' is:

property that descends to an heir, or something transmitted by or acquired from a predecessor.

That is certainly the case here. Calling KTRH a 'news' station is trading on its history as such in the Houston market. The station is currently nothing like it was when it was a 'news' station.

What a shame. Bonnie was always a pleasant, comforting voice. I listened to her a lot in the mornings since Lana Hughes seems to take a lot of time off. Who has been doing news in the afternoon?

Couldn't help but think of this thread when I read in the paper this morning that KTRH cleared more than $20M in ad revenue last year.

Here is the link to that article: http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/headline/sports/6214348.html

What that kind of revenue, can a 27/7 ALL local news operation be viable on KTRH? How much revenue do radio stations in Chicago and Detroit clear doing a 24/7 ALL local news formats like WBBM in Chicago?

I'm sure it's completely viable. This market is long, long overdue for an all-news operation like WBBM, WWJ or WCBS. But Clear Channel wouldn't dare stray from its tested and true cookie cutter programming.
I've always go thought KTRH could go all news during the day, then have the Astros or talk at night and Coast to Coast overnight. That would bump Rush and Hannity and the tremendously annoying Mark Levine to the 950.

What's sad is you clearly don't have the pleasure of personally knowing either of these talented, wonderful women. Lana Hughes' mother had a massive stroke during the holidays and passed away earlier this month. Lana hasn't a vacation for herself in years. All her time off has been spent taking care of her mother and recently, saying her final goodbyes. I am in awe of Lana's strength of character and devotion to both her family and KTRH and she doesn't deserve uninformed comments that lead others to question her character (which is beyond reproach).
Bonnie, who is a wonderful mother, sister, daughter and friend, left to pursue an advanced degree. I am excited for her and her beautiful daughter as they embark on a new adventure. Both of these women are role models for their peers!!

What a relief. Thanks for the clarification, nuzchick. With her talent, I knew she couldn't possibly have been released. :)

Trust me, I wasn't attacking Lana Hughes in any way. That's a shame to read about her mother, and something of a relief to know Bonnie Petrie wasn't fired in a mass layoff.

I'm very nervous for my friends in the KTRH News Department. This is one of the hardest working staffs you will ever meet and layoffs are always demoralizing. Please everyone think good thoughts tomorrow for KTRH.

Have you taken a look at the website today? It looks like at least four people are gone from a newsroom that already had no one in it! Who's left to do the news? Board Ops? This will get interesting when another hurricane hits...

More KTRH walking papers?

Reporter Alan Scaia is out. ...says a little bug in the ear.
...checked the good 'ol KTRH website - bio not there anymore.

Not speculating he was fired necessarily - but wow, it just seems the TRH news 'team' is tiny.
