When did CW ATLANTA become CW 69? Peronally, I hate the new name change and hated it when it was called UPN 69.

Just this week. I think it's a smart move, it identifies the channel position with the branding. Now, they do need to work on the calls, since they brand the station with a network that no longer exists. I'd suggest finding something that identifies with Atlanta since, IMO, I doubt the CW will last through 2010.

And next year, CW 69 will have to become CW 43 (WUPA-DT does not remap to 69, I think they have an FCC OK). It probably would have been better to wait until next year, when the DTV transition is complete. I supect people had trouble finding them on the dial. WATL (My ATL TV) apparently is having the same problems.

I guess UHF channel numbers have become sexy again, especially the highest one available.

WUPA is not the first Atlanta UHF to discontinue using its channel number and then go back to it. WGCL discontinued using the 46 in 1999, and went back to it in 2004.

Then there is the issue of cable. Satellite customers tune their recievers to the OTA position. Cable customers have their locals numbered 2-16 (and even Channel 2 is not on Channel 2, it is on Channel 3).

I thought lots of stations started branding themselves with the network and city name because of the cable/satilite channel? Remember, WATL was WB36 but called themselves "Atlanta's WB." CBS 46 was once CBS Atlanta.

No, all of the branding had to do with the OTA signal since, to terrestrial TV, it's most important. Of course it's actually being tried and true when they don't use their channel assignment in their branding, viewers lose touch with them.

You're right, jal. I always thought it weird that Channel 2 was never on cable channel 2, but as I've grown in the business, I've learned that the TVs have reception bleed-over when a station is programmed on it's channel assignment. The TV tries to tune it in through the cable and the antenna, and that's not kosher.

I'm not sure how the satellite box works that cleans it up. Maybe it's giving you the illusion that you're tuning to channel 2, but you're getting a transponder #222, or whatever. From what I've heard, the satellite co's use the OTA signals, so you (me too, since I've got DirecTV) might actually be getting the OTA, which I think is somewhat odd, because one of the reason why I've got satellite is that the OTA sucks in Smyrna... ESPECIALLY near Dobbins!

They had a partnership with WXIA for a year to produce a 10 PM newscast, but the ratings were so poor WUPA pulled the plug. So I don't see it happening.
