CW Could be on the Move in Phoenix as Soon as Next Week

It appears KASW could be dropping The CW programming, or at least on Coyotes game nights, as soon as next week. I noticed last night the KASW logo has changed from CW61 Arizona to Arizona 61 in it's TV listings page with the with the same logo as Golden Knights station KMCC Vegas 34 and Golden Knights/Arizona Coyotes station KUPX Utah 16. Going deeper into their TV listings I found two Coyotes scheduled next week in place of CW programming, and other changes to their schedule that have nothing to do with the Coyotes on Coyotes game days such as Morning Rush being scheduled in place of ABC15 News simulcast in the morning and Scripps News at 1 PM being extended to 1 hour as well as a few other programs being moved. I also noticed The CW programming on Coyotes game days is nowhere to be found, not even being preempted and aired at a different time. Not seeing it listed on a different channel yet either. I have a feeling KASW 61 hasn't finished updating their schedule with TV listings providers yet. Looking at a multi-day, multi-time TV listing on TitanTV, KASW's schedule on non-Coyotes game days is normal and may not have been updated yet. I have to wonder if Scripps was able to make changes to it's CW affiliation agreement for KASW as part of its recent deal with Nexstar to air CW programming on WMYD in Detroit.

I'm a huge WWE fan. Their C show (really hard to call it that) NXT is joining The CW in October 2024. NXT is currently 2 hours on Tuesday nights on USA. Estimates are WWE will get $20 to $25 million per year for 5 years.

CW gets a weekly live show with a solid fan base. However it's debatable if wrestling fans watch the channel before or after WWE.

With the CW transitioning to a 'sports channel' it will be interesting how all this plays out.

Scripps has also recently registered the website arizona61.com on November 2nd most likely as the new website for the rebranded station similar to vegas34.com and utah16.com

There is no other station in Phx that would pickup CW programming, AZtv is happy with its programming mix, 3TV has its newsports programming and is the back up for CBS shows if CBS5 has scheduling issues.

AZTV7 also has 7.5 as it's overflow channel. I guess the question is would they get more views with CW? KPHE AZFamily Sports is now on Cox, Dish, and Fubo with DirecTV coming soon, so 3TV doesn't necessarily need to air Suns games to get them on Cable anymore. There also a few other choices if The CW doesn't care about retrans fees. It could go to Inyo owned, Scripps programmed KPPX 51 with Ion which is Must-Carry or there is Weigel Broadcasting owned KMOH/KEJR where it could air with METV+ which is Must-Carry. Also, worst case CW could go to a Sub-Channel without carriage on most Pay TV providers. Guess we will have to wait and see what happens.

KAZT has the cable/satellite carriage and the right syndicated programs to make it a good fit for The CW. The only thing they don't have is a full-power over-the-air signal in Phoenix proper (but, they do have one of the better low power signals). Is that going to be a deal-breaker if The CW does decide to move? I don't know.

TV listings have been updated. CW programming on non-Coyotes days has been replaced by King of Queens and Chicago Fire on KASW 61. The CW programming is moving to 15.2 with Nexstar's other network Antenna TV. Coyotes games will be simulcast on 15.2 and 61 with CW programming after the game on 15.2. At least for next week as a transition. The Coyotes game on Saturday November 25 is only scheduled on KASW Arizona 61.

If the TitanTV listings are right, The CW's move to 15.2 is probably going to be temporary. I'm sure Nexstar doesn't want 40+-year-old reruns (even from its sister diginet) to serve as lead-ins to CW network programming.

Maybe Tegna might buy KPAZ21 from TBN or KTVK picks up CW at expense of dropping their 8pm news, Wheel and/or Jepoardy might go to CBS5 at expense of dropping their 6:30pm newscast with the CBS Evening News moving to 5:30 replacing a simulcast from KTVK
What? First off, I doubt TBN will sell KPAZ, even if their networks are available on different platforms these days. Second, Tegna's relationship with The CW is even more strained than Scripps. Finally, KTVK has the Suns, so they definitely DON'T want or need The CW.

You are probably right. I'm guessing The CW will probably be on 15.2 until they find a better station with more Pay TV coverage. 15.2 does limit The CW to just over-the-air and Cox Cable. I guess Scripps didn't see The CW as worth putting on KPPX 51 with ION where it would have more Pay TV coverage.

I doubt that Tegna would buy KPAZ if TBN is even willing to sale. Plus KPAZ elected Must-Carry for 2024-26 cycle, so they won't get retrans fees. KTVK or KAZT picking up the CW would be more likely as they have both elected retransmission consent and have other programming to broadcast outside network programming. If not KTVK or KAZT, The CW will be stuck with a Must-Carry station or a Sub-Channel which limits retrans fees.

They carry the Suns mostly on a low powered station and on the subchannels of KTVK and KOLD

KTVK actually has 50 Suns games scheduled on their main Channel this season. But, once KPHE is added to DirecTV and KTVK is dropped from YouTube TV, they will have about the same coverage on major Pay TV providers. So they could probably moved the Suns exclusively to KPHE 44 plus 3.5 if their contract allows it.

The Suns games simulcast on KTVK guarantees them tens of thousands more viewers than any CW show can bring them. Plus, the 3.5 schedule has not reflected any KPHE simulcasts at all since they started doing so (which is only for live sports, by the way).

Just because CW is not as big as the Big 4 networks with larger national sports rights but how many people watched the Coyotes btw? This isn't Las Vegas btw and even if Inyo or KAZT picks up CW either sale of subchannel, this will pressure Nexstar to find solution either swap or sell of their stations to enter Arizona.

In that case Nexstar better hope KAZT will pick up The CW if they want Pay TV coverage and retrans fees. Otherwise, perhaps they can have Mission Broadcasting buy a station for them that has retransmission consent...

KAZT only reaches Prescott
KAZT has had a Class-A low-powered repeater in Phoenix for many years (plus translators throughout Northern Arizona), and they are on local cable throughout the Phoenix area. Major syndicators don't have a problem putting top-shelf shows on the station, and I don't think The CW would have any problem either.

Nope. KAZT-CD in Phoenix rebroadcast KAZT-TV from Prescott. KAZT is considered one of the major stations in Phoenix.
low power stations dont get full coverage; Phoenix is much larger area including Tempe, Mesa, etc. Univision carries Unimas on 33.2 since the Unimas station only covers Prescott.
