CW To Be Sold? Nexstar Among The Suitors.

They changed WGNA because the previous format of the channel (old sitcoms) made no sense in a world where anyone can see M*A*S*H reruns on demand.
Which is true. It’s only that NewsNation’s remaining entertainment programming completely outdraws the channel’s talk programming in cable ratings, and it’s not even close.

Banfield failed to draw any ratings in the 25–54 demo last week. It’s a rather impressive wholesale rejection of a brand and programming concept.

My local Nexstar affiliate promos Banfield and Dan Abrams (I think) every night during the 6pm, I assume all other Nexstar affiliated do likewise.

So does WDAF.

Also prediction like on WDAF it would be Fox4kc then Newsnation as a Sub Channel if become one then if Nexstar gets Weathernation then Sportsnation if they start one because use to be a TV show on ESPN. On KCWE it would be the CW then Antenna TV, aka Court TV but hopefully Rewind TV then TBD and maybe Chargetv because not in area yet.

They totally do this practice across the chain, and the complete lack of an ROI ratings-wise is utterly stunning.

Nah. Why would they want to do that? At least The CW is being an alternative by going to 8:00-10:00 p.m. ET on Sundays since nobody else is doing that! And after all, The CW has always been the major *alternative* network across the 5 major networks we got now.
The CW added Sundays in the 2018-19 season. They added Saturdays this season.

Prior to this season, WPIX New York used the Saturday 8:00-10:00 pm time slot to make up for preemptions due to baseball coverage. Now, WPIX has to use the two earlier hours for that purpose.

To ensure maximum possible viewership of its shows, The CW never airs new episodes on the Sundays when another network airs the Super Bowl or a major awards show.

The Saturday primetime addition came when Nexstar gave up the daytime hour that they actually programmed for the network (it was Jerry Springer reruns and the hour was a residual from Tribune’s past contracts).

I just realized why I recorded a rerun of "S.W.A.T." and "Legends of the Hidden Temple" and whatever came after that. If there was no COVID or it had been under control, The Golden Globes should have aired. However, The CW has a similar awards show and I apparently thought it would be on last night.

Mystery solved. The world exhales in relief.

Oh no I knew that but my point is that The CW does two hours compared to three hours on Sundays everywhere else and I think The CW should keep that!

Sources say a notable piece of a CW deal also would be local. Nexstar already is a critical station owner for the Mark Pedowitz-run The CW, owning the network’s New York, Los Angeles, Dallas and Houston affiliates, among others. The CW has eight owned-and-operated TV stations of its own, including stations in critical swing state markets, like Detroit, Michigan; Tampa, Florida; Atlanta, Georgia; and Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, as well as major markets like Seattle, Washington and the San Francisco Bay Area. For a company that long has leaned on political advertising, acquiring those stations could mean election-year advertising bounties.

While Nexstar is right at the FCC’s ownership cap of 39 percent of U.S. households, several CW stations are in markets where Nexstar already owns one station (it can own two, as long as they both aren’t among the top four highest-rated), and the company could choose to divest other stations in less lucrative markets in exchange for stations in more lucrative battleground states.
And people thought I was nuts for suggesting a possible station swap earlier in this thread. Now a mainstream news outlet has brought up the possibility.

Right now, I think CBS may end up having to keep the stations in San Fran, Detroit, Sacramento, Philly and Pittsburgh. However, Seattle and Atlanta look to be gettable. Tampa is complicated due to Nexstar having already two stations there.

I could see Nexstar parting with stations in small markets like Austin, Norfolk, Scranton and/or Albany to make the deal work.

Well one can argue in the case of San Francisco Nexstar can vouch for KRON4 to get the CW affiliation away from CBS owned KBCW. Basically if KBCW loses their CW affiliation then it will be converted into KPIX 5+ where KBCW will be independent and will be the Bay Area equivalent of how CBS manages KCAL9 for Los Angeles. I don't see KMAX losing their CW affiliation due to how Nexstar in some parts of the USA have the largest Fox affiliation's outside the Fox O&O division due to Fox Sports. KTXL Sacramento is a Nexstar managed Fox Affiliates they will not give up Fox due to the fact that some parts of the Sacramento TV market is in 49ers Territory.

Nexstar isn't giving up Big 4 TV stations to put The CW on the main channel they may put it on a subchannel. WJW will be Fox it was a battle Fox really wanted to be back in Cleveland but Nexstar wanted WJW, Nexstar sold to Fox for TV stations in Seattle & WITI which Fox owned a long time ago sold WITI in 2008.

I think in West Michigan WXSP could be the new CW TV station since Nexstar owns WXSP which is MyNet TV swaps with Sinclair which they own The CW in West Michigan just my opinion or until the deal comes up with Sinclair for The CW. WXSP was in talks to get The CW when it debut in fall of 2006 but because of sports largely Pistons & Big Ten Basketball at the time they couldn't come to an agreement, and why West Michigan was one of the few that The CW didn't sign on with UPN which was WXSP The CW wasn't going to be on WZPX as they aired The WB on 22-hour delay aired it at 6PM the next only thing in pattern was Kids WB/The WB afternoon during the last months of The WB in Jan to Sep 06.

It is unclear whether or not affiliates would switch such as in Charlotte, Chicago, Philly and San Francisco. It’s possible. Also not sure if Nexstar would take on the CW O&Os.

I think WAXN would be crazy to move Family Feud out of primetime for MyNetwork TV (if WMYT dropped it for the CW) unless they put MyNet after the 10pm news, and they already have The Goldbergs at 11pm and it probably does OK. I think MyNetwork TV would be a better fit for WCCB.

Nexstar is essentially at the regulatory cap. They might be able to add second stations in large markets where they already own one, but moving into any new markets (Atlanta, Detroit, Philly) is not going to happen.
