Cw33 shows its amateur roots once again....

Just watching cw33, they had a friend/neighbor of mine whos name was quoted, but didnt show her in their package on Deep Ellum...Wow, gotta love how they threw that thing together. My question is why are these guys still putting out a newscast??

I'm sure it's just a matter of time. I haven't watched the last few months. Are the anchors still standing in what looks like a warehouse?

From what I understood, the field open/close was done by a freelancer. No offense, but if you're too cheap to hire decent on-air staff, you deserve to have your whole operation shut down.

Is KDAF much worse than sister KHCW? I thought it would be better than KHCW (with Sherry Williams) since it is run by the same company and in a bigger market. Tonight, KHCW starts its expanded 1 h newscast that KDAF has already been doing.

No, KDAF is still pretty bad. The only person worth watching on that newscast is Bob Goosman, and that's just because he seems to know what he's doing (and he pulled a stint with KTVT a while back before they went all Kristine on us). The rest of 'em belong in a small market somewhere, because that's what their on-air skills remind me of.

Mostly I watch Fox 4 (mainly because it, too, is a 9 pm newscast, and I have to get my beauty rest :D) and either WFAA or KTVT. Used to watch KXAS, but it became too much of a train wreck.

And I have a philosophical disagreement with freelancers doing your on-camera opens and closes. If the only reason you're bringing these people in is to be eye candy, there's no reason to do news. (And besides, reporters aren't that expensive - just take a look at the latest market salary survey.) News should be done by a staff that is full-time, is locally-based, and knows the area and the issues. But that's probably just an old dinosaur talking - today's news has little resemblance to actual "news," it's just a vehicle to sell products and promote shows (sometimes under the guise of "news").

Bob is about the only guy on there who has credibility. All the rest of them are small market hacks...

At least they have the resources of a CBS affiliate to draw from...KDAF needs either two things:

A) Shut down the news department and sell everything off and show an hour of whatever syndicated program during that hour.

B) Fire the news director and most of the "talent"(Anchors), then rebuild this thing from the ground up. Spend the money and hire decent on/off camera staff from the anchors all the way down, Keep the Tom Crespos/Terri Chapells away from this market. Hell, we have three big schools (SMU/TCU/UNT) not to mention a few JuCOS with RFTV programs within a 100 mile distance for the station to pull from, get to it. Also, throw in some decent money to get the equipment up to snuff, as well as imaging for the newscast itself, something along the lines of a CW2 (Denver) or KTLA.

But isn't CW doing better than My Network TV? Not that that says alot... IT seems pointless to call itself KDAF 33 when all the graphics still say CW 33.

The CW is doing better than My Network TV - for now. The CW's biggest ratings draw, WWE Smackdown, is going to My Network TV this fall.

As I mentioned in another thread (http://www.radio-info.com/smf/index.php/topic,104424.0.html) it seems as though Tribune is trying to distance all of its stations from the CW network. This is not just a KDAF phenomenon, it seems to be true of all the Tribune owned CW stations. It's hard to know if this means Tribune is about to kick the CW to the curb or maybe they think the CW might fold and they don't want to have all their stations so closely identified with it. Either way, it seems something is up.

KDAF has hired a new news director, David Duitch. He used to be WFAA's news director. (see Ed Bark's note on his hiring here: http://www.unclebarky.com/dfw_files/d7d3e50e60c2e4d39a05ca388db8e7fc-752.html)

KDAF is reportedly going to start a morning show next year. The new owners of Tribune seem commited to fixing that place.

Stay tuned.

and to qoute JR...The ratings on MyNetwork will clobber CW and it will be a slobberknocker folks. :p

So, you're saying that the CW is about to be "Beaten Like A Goverment Mule"? Perhaps it'll get placed in the "Pedigree" or read its "Last Rites". ;)
