D.L. Hughley Show is Official

Replaces Skip Murphy on 8/26. I wonder what the affiliate landscape will look like. I ran Baisden, but I have had a lot of success with local voicetracking and letting my deep music library play (actually, better than Baisden did).

I am really torn on which direction I will go on this... The content may be funny, but I play much better music, with a much better rotation.

It will be D.L., his sidekick, & Jackie Reid.

Personally, Chris I like the local afternoon drive time choice. Upbeat music, a traffic jam mix, traffic reports and a local jock interacting with listeners (ex. call-ins, prizes, Facebook, Twitter) doesn't sound like a bad idea? I really like the route HOT 105 in Miami and MAJIC 107.5 here in ATL went. Don't get me wrong I was a huge fan of Michael Baisden's Show. Michael and George Wellborn made his show feel like local radio. He touched on real life issues that African Americans were dealing with something that Harvey, Joyner nor Smiley has never really dedicated an entire show around. Listeners are really gonna be confused as they've been adapted to Baisden, then wondering who Murphy was, now bringing on Hughley. Way too many changes for the average Urban AC listener to adapt too. Most cities have 2 Urban AC outlets so all this shuffling between jocks will just hand the competition another listener.

Before anybody pops a blood vessel, this is just my opinion!

My programming gut is telling me to keep doing what I am doing, as it is working. I passed on Murphy, because I knew he was temporary. D.L. had also in his later years gotten a bit political. If he brings that to this show, it could be a problem.

Even though we are not 100% live, we still do FB interaction during the tracked show...

I'm going to at least wait for more information and listen to it before making any decisions. I'll also run it by my listeners on my FB page...

8) Chris, is voicetracking your afternoons cheaper than going live? Is your voicetracking in house?

Hello, I'm out of Phoenix where we currently don't have an Urban AC. So we have no Steve Harvey or DL choice locally. Does any body know whatstations in other markets carry the new DL in the afternoon? I would like to give his show a listen.

I saw on All Access that Jasmine Sanders will co-host with D.L. along with Steve Wilson. Skip Cheathem and Juan D are both involved too.

No mention of the female frontrunners, including Jacque Reid.

The show will air on all the Cumulus Urban AC's that were airing Skip Murphy.

KMJK Kansas City
KMEZ New Orleans
KOKY Little Rock (although its in a trust)
KNEK Lafayette
KISX Tyler (owned by Town square)
WDMK Detroit (owned by Radio One)

Not sure what other stations are gonna carry it but those listed above will

Yes, it's in house... It's has facebook interaction, etc... Just not a body in the studio 24/7. It's been very well received. Much cheaper... Small market, so I am low on budget.

You are correct. They are staying with Jasmine.

So, how is Doug Banks Show doing in afternoon drive? I know George Wellborn formerly of Baisden's show is now a part of it. Geez, I haven't heard Doug since his morning show days.

Your welcome. It's clear Cumulus wont put local talent back on the afternoons after their massive cuts in 2008. I wouldnt be surpised in the future Cumulus puts the Touch on their Urban AC's for cost cutting. Clear Channel is already doing it with their small market Urban AC's

Since it's based in Dallas, it should air on Radio One's KSOC right? They dropped Baisden's show in 2011 and have been local since then

Not sure if it will air in Dallas. Honestly KSOC needs to stay local. WFUN in St Louis dropped Baisden too after flipping to Urban Oldies. WFUN is way ahead of KMJM now

So what is Skip Murphy going to be doing now? Still a fan, though the recent program wouldn't go down as his most memorable work.

Hopefully Skip Murphy knew the situation going into it that he was apparently just there temporarily to play some music and buy some time. He's a Tom Joyner disciple plus he knows what a great radio show sounds like when he was doing mornings in Dallas so I highly doubt the watered-down afternoon show he's doing was his idea.

I'm still holding hope that someday his old morning crew will get together but the ship may have sailed on that. The 2-hour internet show they did the last few years was perfect but they just couldn't find any investors to keep funding them. Maybe he'll be Joyner's successor but unless he's able to bring in his team, it won't be the same.

Unless I've missed a detail, is it confirmed that DL Hughley will do his show from Dallas? IIRC Doug Banks hasn't been heard in DFW in his syndication days although his sidekick Dede McGuire does KKDA's morning drive. But I wouldn't mind checking out DL in a week once he debuts.

Yeah that's what I read in some of the initial reports. Reach wants him to base the show in Dallas and with the announcement of his team (Jasmine Sanders already in Dallas doing the Skip Murphy show and Skip Cheatham has always been in Dallas), that's what I'd expect.
