D.M. Ratings

Citcomm is # 1 in the D.M. book
When you look at WHO falling,
come on guys...
look at 98.3 WOWFM.
In some key demos we have TIED with them..
and they are less that 3 points ahead of us in almost every other one.
Thank you Paul Harvey.
FM Talk is hot.
When you think about 100.3...don't forget about the possibility of C.C. going hot talk.
..but maybe I'm wrong,
what's your thoughts?

Hey mac-
Yeah, I agree. WHO is really a product of the WWII generation, and while I have tremendous respect for WHO and for it's history, time will eventually have it's way.

The only thing I find myself listening to on WHO anymore is ocassionally Jan and some of Rush. But, I'm always checking out Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity, You guys 1-4, and I do listen to Savage every once in a while if I really want to be stimulated. I do wish you'd put a bit more local news on...but since we can get that from T.V. and the register, it really doesn't matter.

Hot Talk would be a really good idea on 100.3. It's the only alternative to going to something like Rhythmic CHR, which even though many people love to hear, it's forbidden among those who 'know better' than others.

Rhythmic CHR, which

What do you mean that it's forbidden among those who "know better" than others? (BTW, I ask this out of curiosity, not outrage. Just trying to understand.)

An interesting idea might be for CC to put a CHR format on 100.3 and flip 107.5 to rhythmic CHR. From what I've seen, CC does a relatively decent job with both formats. Call me clueless... just throwing it out there. You can start firing... NOW.

No, that's not a bad idea. The CHR should be on the biggest signal, which is 100.3.

There are some other possiblities I can think of...

1) CHR on 100.3, move alternative from KCCQ to 107.5 to cover both Ames and Des Moines, with Rhythmic on 105.1.

2) CHR on 100.3, move "The Bus" to 107.5, go back to rhythmic on 106.3.

3) CHR on 100.3, move "The Bus" to 107.5, put CC's "La Preciosa" Regional mexican oldies format on 106.3. (based on what's it's done in some other markets, it would blow 1700 and the FM from Perry out of the water.)

The least likely thing for CC to do is put any type of talk on any of their Des Moines FM stations. There's no way they're going to do anything to hurt WHO. I don't care how close WOW-FM is to WHO in certain demos, how does WOW-FM's billing compare to WHO's?

I think CC blew it several years ago when Wilks was running KJJY and KHKI into the ground. They could have gone country on 100.3 and killed off both KJJY and KHKI.

Re: CHR

What was the beat classifed as, Rythmic CHR or hip-hop? I'd seriously doubt that CC would ty that format again?

Technically it was listed as a Rhythmic CHR.

CC Des Moines

Don't be surprised if there's something new in...The Mix...
Edited by radiogeekathome on 12/20/05 06:10 AM.

Re: CC Des Moines

uh...you mean My? Hasn't been Mix for quite some time now...

What I mean...

What I mean by that is that the majority of the business owners who, so far, have chosen to advertise in DSM, feel that even though the listership to stations like the BEAT was relatively high, they have a responsibility towards the community to NOT advertise on such formats because the music contributes to a bad element within the community.

Thus, the business owners are like 'gatekeepers' of content if you will. In this case, it's music. Doesn't matter if the market is underserved.

Now, granted things are changing, but by and large, the BEAT went down b/c it didn't pull in enough revenue.

KISS is able to squeak by playing a fair amount of Rhythmic b/c they 'hide' it in with the Pop and Alternative tracks.

Do I like this fact about DSM? No, not really. And, in the coming years it will naturally change anyway, but it will be gradual, as the business community of old dies off.

To put it another way...

It's what happens when the business community can't relate to it's customers on a 'deeper' lifestyle or personal level.
Edited by radiorobert on 12/21/05 03:41 PM.

I'm well aware of what they are NOW. I'm talking about what is TO COME.

What's to come is to go BACKWARDS?? Why not be K-Lyf again, then. Or WHO-FM!

Yeah, I think you hit it on the head there. I bet you are right on some level about the Beat. If there is a perception that advertisers are tacitly endorsing a "bad" element in the community, granting of course that they have promotional/product positioning decisions to make regarding their own businesses, nevertheless it seems pretty shortsighted to view an outlet like the Beat in that way. Or for that matter, any rhythmic/CHR station. However, I can't help feeling like once again, the grownups don't really get it. For now though, you can't argue too much with marketplace realities.... if that's the way advertisers see it, that's the way they see it. Too bad for DSM.
