D Magazine awards a "BEST" to MOViN 107.5

I just don't recall the kitchen there having much more than a snack and Coke machine, so I'm wondering what the attraction would be to eat and drink there. Play, I understand, as they're playing like it's a contender in this market.

::)

These "so called Picks" are often done on a whim based on one's individual choice. D magazine pick things so they can appear to be "hip",but their track record in doing so has more misses than hits. At least they are being consistent.

Yes, and like the restaurant section in D, oftentimes someone is PAYING for the exposure, but it's done under the guise of a "survey," "best of," "recommended," etc. You can bet, too, that 5 out of 5 doctors pay for those "glowing" reviews that D devotes 20-30 pages to in some issues. Ahh, the old days when D was more substance than filler...and often had 200+ pages in a single issue.

There is very little in D Magazine, if anything, that isn't brought on by trade offs or paid ads. Best Oral Surgeon, Best Realtor, Best Cologne Sold in a Barbeque Stand, etc.

One poor guy I know is quite an artist....he does superb architectural emblishments from metal, steel, and the like in his welding shop. D talked him into an expensive trade-off...you'll get lots of calls, they told him. He said OK, so he got picked the Best Whatever in Dallas. He told me he not only didn't get one commission traceable to being endorsed as the Best Whatever, but he didn't get one inquiry.

And then about a month ago, I got an email from someone at D telling me that they were having a big "opening" at the Nasher for D's new travel magazine. They had sent out 1000 invitations to the "Dallas Rich and Famous." If I would play the piano for three hours for them, they would put my card or brochure in every guest's Goody Take Home Bag.

I told them I play for money. They told me to take a hike. How much did they save? 300 hundred bucks. Wonder if the Rich and Famous know that probably almost everything at that party was a trade off...little to no cash changed hands. El Cheapo Skates.

Oh, by the way. I was reading D's Best of magazine while standing in front of the magazine rack at Barnes and Noble the other day. (I'm paying them back by not buying their magazine -- see previous post)

The laugh of laughs was The Best Gay Bar. They say it's Barney's in NorthPark where the gays come in for the free wine and to socialize, and every now and then apparently buy something.

That's good. That means that there are at least some people in the store for an hour or so every day that aren't employees.

I know in the mid-80s "D" named my employer at the time "Worst" supposedly because of a personal vendetta one of the editors had against the company (a consumer electronics servicer) and threatened that if she didn't get her way she would do it and did, and got into a lawsuit, but I never found out exactly how it turned out. I have noticed though when I pass by the "D" at the checkout lane they no longer name the "Best and Worst". Haven't picked up one to read in about 25 years.

Sounds like they are disciples of the recently departed President of the Dallas Press club.

I might be asking for a beating, but I like D Magazine. I read it every month and like the articles. I just skip over all the doctor/realtor stuff. I think that Tim Rogers has done an OK job. I don't know much about the behind-the-scenes stuff, but I'm a woman who reads a TON of magazines, and I gotta say I enjoy it. Sorry, just felt like someone had to say something nice about it.

It's very similar to Fort Worth, Texas magazine. Mostly ads.
Dmagazine ocassionaly has good articles and thier Best Of is very fun to read. That Fort Worth mag is a joke!! It doesn't even have true atricles in it. I can't believe it's still in print.
