I live in Philly (no smart remarks LOL :), I was going through old cassette tapes from my friends house, who lived in New York. I came across this tape with a few minutes of a station called da buzz or the buzz, the tapes were from 1996, from what I heard on the commercials. The jock was an English accented' female and the music was an Adult Alternative mix. The station sounded really good music and presentation wise, what is on that frequency today, I never caught the dial setting. What happened to this station and did it receive good ratings, could this station exist today in New York. We never had nothing like that in Philly in the mid 90's, it was very entertaining.

That sounds like 105.1 "The Buzz". It didn't last very long.

That sounds like the station on the tape, what happened, why did it go under??

105.1 was always an underperforming station in the ratings, until it finally went Hip Hop. There have been many AC formats that were tried on the frequency, but the format people probably remember the most are its days as Soft Rock WNSR in the 80s.

105.1 WDBZ "The Buzz"

In November 1996 105.1 dropped it's Hot-AC format as "Mix 105 WMXV" and flipped to Modern AC as WDBZ "The Buzz".....At the time Modern AC was the new format that was being tested (like Jack's Adult Hits format today).......It was less then a year before WDBZ was dumped and 105.1 evolved back to an AC as WNSR...It would later become Hot-AC WBIX "Big 105" a short time later which was just as much a failure as WDBZ "The Buzz" was.<P ID="signature">______________

That is correct: "WTJM New York." On a related note from a previous post I can still remember one of WMXV's promos/sweepers that said something like "The MX is for MIX and the V for Variety..." WOW!! I was only a wee-little-lad when I heard that. Guess some things still stick with you. Jammin' 105 was a great station with a great run even though the numbers didn't really show it. It had a classy presentation and a strong Talent lineup. I truly miss those days. While WNEW is very similar, it is by no means WTJM, and I'm sure I know the reason why that holds true...

OK I am done reminiscing now...

105.1 "The Buzz" is another example of something close to a new and innovative format idea failing in New York City. They later became the extremely generic and boring "Big 105" and ran susequent mundane formats afterward.

The suits rely too heavily on songs that "test well" for people with nothing better to do than sit in a room for hours on end instead of work and spend money. Why do programmers continue to trust the unemployed with no money to decide what everyone else has to listen to (rhetorical question)?

Before that, when they were WNSR, their promo was "The N is for New York, S for Soft, R for Rock"

..also, during one of their incarnations (either Big 105 or The Buzz) Danny Bonaduce hosted the morning show.

That lady was Abby Bonell, who is currently at KNRS, a talk station in Salt Lake City Utah.

IMO, she was the best part of the station.

She was very good...and the imaging was excellent, too. Remember the TV spots?

Then I believe that he went on to WPDH Poughkeepsie. I only know that because there are several spots in my area where WPDH completely obliterates WKXW (NJ 101.5)...since I no longer listen to the "mayhem that they call programming" I couldn't tell you if those locations still exist. I DO know that I think they were going to make a reality series out of Danny Bonaduce's life...I guess they could call it the "Never Ending Happy Hour" Show.

I'm afraid not. Probably didn't watch much of the programming where they would advertise. Modern A/C isn't my thing. I recall the logo though. Big orange-reddish ball with an awful font I think. Ick. (It's better than the new Weather Channel logo though. :p )

During this time, the station was very 'generic', and the liners and DJs simply referred to it as "FM 105.1". The call letters were only used for the hourly ID.
