Dahl Has Mixed Emotions Re: Reunion With Meier On Jack-FM

In today's Tribune (click to read article), Phil Rosenthal reports that while Steve Dahl, when he moves his show to Jack-FM next week, is confident "we'll do fine on our own", he didn't rule out the possibility of welcoming now ex-WCKG personality and former on-air partner Garry Meier. "I wasn't opposed to having him join us in mornings, but that's not something that he wants to do right now," he was quoted as saying on his show this week. He added that he wouldn't be surprised if Meier already landed a deal with another station in the Windy City.

With that, Rosenthal also reported on a station where Garry won't be headed in the near future:

Dahl and Kilman speculated that Meier might be headed for Emmis Communications' WLUP-FM 97.9, the Loop, which is looking for an afternoon complement to morning personality Jonathon Brandmeier.

"I don't think they're paying what he's looking for," Dahl said.

Marv Nyren, who oversees Emmis' Chicago stations, insisted by e-mail that Meier is not headed to the Loop, "unless you define the Loop as a geographical spot on a map of Chicago."

There was also a spot in that article that indicated that discussions between Meier and CBS aren't over. If that is true, there are only two stations I could see him landing. The first, and less likely, is WXRT. The second, which would be more likely, would be The Score. Now, if he worked at The Score, I could see him doing morning drive, as a non-sports wake up show, like Imus or Dahl when he worked at the old Sports 1000. So then, what of Mike North? Perhaps they would move him to afternoon drive. Imagine the following lineup. Meier and Turano from 5:00 to 9:00. Buhrs and Bernstine move from afternoons to their new time from 9:00 till noon. Mike Murphy would be on at his usual time from noon till 2:00. Mike North could have the 2:00 till 7:00 slot. As far as Mike and Brian, they could either have the shift afterwords, or act as fill ins or weekenders.

I don't see any way Meier goes to WSCR. I doubt that Mike North would accept a pay cut to move to afternoons, and WSCR has decent afternoon numbers now as it is.

But before jumping to conclusions, we are overlooking the fact that we are not sure exactly what WCKG is going to do. If they do not go Spanish, they might keep Meier on board, whether for mornings or another daypart, as (at least) one personality that people would tune in to hear.

Unless CBS is planning a similar plot to JACK-FM of no personalities (until Steve Dahl), somebody will be announcing on 105.9. And if it's in English, it could be Meier.
