Here in NY his Metromedia Co. owned WNEW-tv-am-fm. Several years ago I recall an interview on WFUV w/one of WNEW-fm's alumni stating that he had been an ideal owner in that he (Griffin) was not intrusive and let the stations do what they though best to make a profit.
In 1966 and beyond I was charged with taking my midwestern Grandmother around to the various tv show tapings when she visited at Christmastime.
The Merv Griffin Show taped at the tiny and somewhat dilapidated "Little Theater" off Times Square. Since I had been on tv and in commercials myself the tech end of these shows interested me, I remember that they had striplights normally used overhead onstage in this case mounted along the balcony rail and a large curved column speaker there for acts that used taped music, most music was live, I believe Mort Lindsey conducted.
Here is a clip from his show dated 12-68 featuring a somewhat inebriated Judy Garland and Merv singing "the Trolly Song":

He makes mention of the wireless microphone that he and guests used when venturing into the audience, his show was the first time I had seen one in use.
