Dale Lane

Just saw in a local newspaper wher Dale Lane died on labor day at 62. Dale worked a a few stations in the Albany area. He was at WFLY when The Times Record newspapers of Troy owned it. WFLY changed from Classical to a rock type format in the late 60's into the early 70's when it was sold to Functional broadcasting and changed to easy listening. He also I believe was at WTRY-AM/FM after WFLY was sold. I am not familiar with any other radio stints, but understand there were some. No cause was listed for his passing.

Also I noticed that an obit in an area publication for Dennis "Den" Conners. I believe he was was the Den Conners on WFLY at the same time as Dale Lane. He died sept. 3rd, just 6 days short of his 59th birthday. Lived most of his life in Massachusetts. Did not continue in radio. Maybe someone on this forum can confirm they are one and the same.

I remember Dale Lane as the mid-day guy on FLY when they rocked back in 1970-1971. From what I understand, he was also the overnight guy at WWWD (WVKZ) in the early 80s...

Lane also did middays for a while on WTRY. This occurred after his stint with WFLY. He worked at WTRY under PD Dan Martin. Lane replaced midday guy Jerry Tyler (who was "John Tyler") at WSNY in the 60's.

I dated Dale in the 70's and 80's so I know a liitle bit.

First of all, he was NOT Dan Martin as someone stated. When he didn't use his real name, he used Jim Kramer and that was only one time at one station. His real name was PERFECT for radio where no one is ethnic and all are from Anywhere, USA.

He died of liver failure. Probably because he drank HEAVILY. He also smoked cigarettes. He had 3 wives and no children. His Mom outlived him. She died a year and a week after Dale, which was her first born. This is a man who never found happiness but his voice brought joy to many. When he worked at 3WD (WWWD) he used his own personal record collection to make his show interesting. Too bad he was on the air from Midnight til 5 AM so not too many people heard him.

He got out of radio in the early 80's and became a professional cleaner for the Post Office main branch in Schenectady. Anyone who knew him knows that he liked EVERYTHING clean and in order, from the clothes hanging in his closet to his prescious record collection. I hope he finally found what he could not find here on Earth because he was a decent, yet unhappy, man.
