Dallas Cowboys Radio Network grade

I know this is not too much of a pro Ticket site, but the Cowboy's season is is now over and just wanted to get a feel on how everyone thought the Ticket did in their first year as the Cowboy's flagship.

I thought the bright spot was Larry Brown, he did very good. Bob Sturm was OK I thought he would do better. For the post game show I was a little disappointed. Norm's broadcasting abilities and somewhat detearating and Greggo seemed to try to hard.

I think there will be changes next year.

The Dallas Sissycowboys are in much more need of changes.

An Overhaul is needed. Will it happen..no . Why? Jerry Jones.

I love the Ticket's coverage of the Cowboys. I could have done without Charlie Waters, but other than that I had no complaints. I thought they even did a fairly good job with their "turn down the tv sound and listen to us" thing. The pre and post game shows were better than ever. I'm sure their coverage will keep getting better and better. Let's see what they do in year 2 before too many of us complain. The Cowboys are where they belong -on a SPORTS station.

Brad and Charlie don't seem to have a lot of chemistry. The broadcast seems stiff and painful at times. For a NFL game broadcast, it too often sounds like a division II college game broadcast.

The other thing that has become a beating is every little thing during that broadcast has a sponsor ("we'll have the Tampax play of the game following the Midol 2 minute warning after this message sponsored by..."). It's really tedious.

I don't care too much about the Rangers or Mavs, so I can't compare the Cowboys game broadcasts against those. Between the Stars and Cowboys, I would definitely prefer Ralph and Razor on the Stars game broadcast than the Brad and Charlie. At least Ralph and Razor have some chemistry, have some humor, and seem to enjoy the game. Considering the Stars broadcasts are simulcast on TV (FSN/KDFI) and radio (WBAP), they do a reasonably good job at keeping the radio listener current (score, regularly telling how much time is left in the period, etc.). Sometimes the Cowboys broadcast doesn't do a good job at that...

Who cares? Nobody listens to a game on the radio unless they can't watch it on TV.

There's no point to trying to listen to the game on the radio while watching it on TV for two reasons: 1) the DVR, and 2) that annoying little 1/2-second delay.

You're probably mostly correct, but with me I will listen to the television if it's Joe Buck & Troy Aikman or Al MIcheals & John Madden. But if the networks send a spare crew like Bill Maas to do the game I rather listen to Brad Sham on radio.

When KVIL carried the Boys, there was an Eventide audio delay inline with the game audio....it was used to match up with the local TV audio....so there was NO delay (It varied at times from less than 100ms to over a couple of seconds).
So it can/HAS been done

as a operations guy that had to try to match up their log to a automation system they were pathetic sometimes they would send tones sometimes not they would send you a 40 page log then not follow it. Their on air product was far superior to their behind the scenes operations

Sorry...I have to disagree. I have heard the TV guys on maybe 10 games since the days of Frank Glieber. I prefer the guys who cover the teams (what ever the sport) over the network guys who might see them once a month if that.

Charlie waters was a huge disappointment to me this year. He is a great interview and was excellent in the pre and post game rolls he has played in the past. As a color man he leaves a lot to be desired. Too much coach speak and he had a hard time putting things into terms a non player could understand. As far as reading spots and giving scores......hopeless. As much as I hate three men in the booth bring back Hanson or Babe and let Charlie be the third man next year.

Hello All,
I like Brad Sham play-by-play but missed Babe. Sham's sidekick sucked this year!!!! I think mangement needs to look for Sham a TV Sports person like Dale/Babe was. I think Jones needs to put the Flagship station back on KRLD 1080, WBAP 820, or change KLLI FREE FM/LIVE 105.3 to the Dallas Cowboy Radio Network...with music and sports after football season. The Ticket and The Bone channels suck in coveage in DFW. I heard Cowboys on low power stations like KIKT 93.5 in Greenville, TX...and other stations in Southern OK. Jones needs to rethink his radio contracts.

Dan The MAN!!!
The North TEXAS RADIO MAN!!!!

Is it just me, or does Charlie Waters sound just like Mr. Mackey, the teacher on "South Park"? Mmm-kay?

I know Waters was an awesome player and a drooled-over hunk in his time, and I don't wish to take away from that. But it seems like EVERY sports outlet, radio and TV both, are scrambling to give ANY ex-football player a chance in the announcer's booth. There's some really pathetic ones out there, and the more networks they keep inventing, the more diluted and bottom-feeder the "talent" is. You don't have to have played the game to know the game, and that's why guys like Jim Nantz and Al Michaels are still needed, to give that "finesse" to the presentation that many of the ex-jocks just don't have.

Now whoever voice-trained Troy Aikman should be given the Marconi Lifetime Achievement award. From a stuttering, dumb-jock-sounding mumbler to one of the best voices out there on network sports, THAT took some doing.

You do realize, don't you, that Jones doesn't program the stations in the off-season, right? So he can't change 105.3 to music and sports...unless he buys the damn thing...

KRLD's problem is Rangers conflicts in Aug-Sep-Oct, and WBAP's problem is Stars conflicts Oct-Nov-Dec (And theoretically Jan since they need to at least plan for playoffs)

And dinosaurs once roamed the earth.

The question becomes what TV signal do you want to match the audio up to?
1. Over-the-air? (i.e. rabbit ears)
2. Cable TV (if so, which cable companys feed, since they're not all exactly the same)
3. Dish Network?
4. Direct TV?
4A. What about the time dealy between my 'regular' DTV broadcast and the 2-3 second delay my TIVO puts in? Which one of those do you sync with?

I remember hearing the ticket PD on talking about the 'sync' issue, and he said (IIRC), that there are like 7 possible TV sources, and 2, maybe 3 audio sources (Ticket, Bone, other Ticket FM signal) in DFW...

Try watching and listening to the games with Direct TV..I hear the play a full 5-7 seconds before I see it on TV. But I fight through it because I like Brad Sham.

Charlie Waters was not enjoyable to listen to. I still think Darren Woodson would have been better. Overall I think the The Ticket/Blue Star Media did an okay job. There were some technical issues that could be worked out and they seemed to have changed the format of the postgame show. The Locker Room show was taped in later games. I hated that the Bone dumped out of the network early instead of carrying the full 3 hours of postgame coverage. My overall grade would be a B-.

The Ticket was selling a device at the first of the season that would match up your radio and tv by delaying the radio either 2, 5, or howevermany seconds your source was. I would much rather hear brad than the network guy who never sees the cowboys games and doesn't know jack about the team. Like in preseason when the network guys called Terrance Copper Terrance COOPER all game long. Or you would hear the same stories EVERY week from all the different network guys. -Hey did you know Tyson Thompson was from right here in Irving and that Tony Romo was one stroke away from qualifying for the PGA last year?

Often the TV feed runs behind the radio feed - we have Time Warner's DVR and we just pause the TV feed for as long as we need to to make the radio and TV feeds sync. My son and I watch Mavs games like this, too, although he hates it when the commercials don't match (he's 7).

I don't remember him being a stutterer as a player. But he mumbled a lot. And he did it on purpose, hoping the media would end the interview questions quicker.

He's had some training as well. But most fans were never exposed to his normal speaking voice.

The Bone sucks all together, they should've dumped that station when Cumulus bought them and put the Cowboy games on the Ticket because the Ticket is a Sports station and the Bone isn't.

Personally I like "neutral announcers". I rather hear the game objectively ,without the cheerleading. Yeah I know ,that will never happen with the Cowboys. Troy is indeed good, but there are times when he sounds like he is cheerleading only to rein it in a couple of minutes later.
