Dallas-Ft. Worth Radio Ratings: June 2023

Why is hiring a great morning show always at the top of the list? How many great morning shows are there? In my opinion, kegl messed up trying to replace Russ Martin when he died instead of just focusing on fixing the playlist. Maybe all of this was needed so the Eagle could have a quick breather from HD-1 before it returns in the fall/early 2024. Rock stations have sports all the time so that’s not an issue
You may want to watch the YouTube video on HINEY WINE and Terry Dorsey to see the importance and effectiveness of a great morning show. You can find it by searching RADIO MEMORIES HINEY WINE. There is a segment in there about "So goes the morning show.....so goes the radio station." I learned that while being GM of RKO'S WHBQ and working for Mike Hankins, former Program Director at WLS back in the 70's at my first radio job at WNDE and WFBQ in Indianapolis. The concept is that you get as many sets of ears in the morning as possible with a great morning show. Since most people drive to work and then drive home, you pick up that same morning audience in PM drive. If you are in a market like Dallas where there is a long time spent in the car driving back and forth to work with no mass transit, it becomes even more important. So, you want to keep those morning listeners and recycle them to PM drive and maybe have them also if they drive to lunch. It is all about building your audience in the morning and recycling it during the rest of the day. I was fortunate in being able to spend several years at WHBQ with Rick Dees and was able to hire Terry Dorsey at KPLX to launch a better, more highly rated morning show there that ended up being the #1 morning show in Dallas at both KPLX and later at KSCS when Terry landed there for a lot more money than he was making at KPLX. Those station's overall success was built on the success of their morning shows in the ratings.

One could make the case that the Eagle is back, it just happens to be at 103.7 and calls itself "Alt" now. One truth in radio has always been, if you don't do your job well, someone else will come in and take your place. Another is, if you leave your format to try something else, you might not be able to come back to it if your new format doesn't work.

That is spot on. I worked for a company in a college town that had the rights to the team's sports. The basketball games performed terribly. We took them because we had to in order to get the football. Plus, that the owners were local people who attended college there meant it was a source of pride for them. When the oldies station flipped to CHR/Top-40, we finished the football season with the games on the CHR and put the basketball games on a AAA and a low-rated country station. The PD's of both stations were livid.
What station was this if you don't mind me asking or feel comfortable answering.

The group I worked for in college was the Premier Marketing Group in Central Missouri. The radio stations are now owned by Cumulus, and the publishing division is part of Zimmer Marketing Group now.

KOQL 106.1 was Jammin' Oldies as "KOOL 106.1" when I arrived 22 years ago. In fact, I will have arrived in Mid-MO 22 years ago tomorrow. Shortly after 9/11, it became Top-40 Q106.1. That format was on KJCQ 104.1, which became KLIK-FM "KLIK Country 104" with the change at 106.1. KOOL 106.1 was where the football and men's basketball games aired. The football games continued at Q106.1 while the basketball games were moved to 102.3 BXR and KLIK Country 104. For the following season, the football games joined the basketball games on those stations. KFRU 1400 and KLIK 1240 also aired the games. The rights deal with Mizzou Sports Properties required an AM and FM that covered Columbia and Jefferson City.
