Dallas-Ft. Worth Radio Ratings: September 2023

At least they are trending up. If they went from a 1 to a 0.5 everyone would be saying they need to flip the format

ha. I don't care if they had a 2.0 - I'd still say they need to change format. It won't last much longer. Just my opinion. Doing full station remotes from a bar with 15 people there ain't gonna save it.

It never really stopped, it's just a bit more of the 90's and a bit less of currents right now. Seems to be cycling back and forth over the last couple of months.
I was just listening a couple of days ago and it seemed to be hitting the currents and recurrents harder than I remembered from a few months back. Does The Wolf day-part its music?

I wouldn't call it day-parted. They play a block of currents and recurrents, then throw on a gold for good measure. Then it seems to run a ton of gold, and mix in a current or two an hour. It's somewhat baffling, to be honest.

Some posters have claimed "rock is too polarizing," yet a highly music intensive station that plays mostly rock music (albeit very little in the way of heavy stuff) is pulling terrific numbers in the money demo. Imagine that!

KEGL's weak numbers with rock music were due to poor programming execution as opposed to any innate aversion toward rock music, it would appear.
And it’s not a heritage station plus no personalities that are a draw. Seems like not having a morning show is hurting them. They’re winning based on the music. Credit is more than due here IMO!

I’d argue that Camfield guy is a personality that is at least a little bit of a draw. He’s successful enough that the Oddity “Alts” have him voice tracked on some other stations. I’ll agree that it’s mostly the music that’s turned them around.

Though, I will never like “Alt” 103.7. 88.1 is the exact same thing but without commercials and kinda wish they’d cannibalize a little more of 103.7’s audience.

Alt 103.7 has found a pretty successful strategy for Dallas by taking the typical Audacy Alt playlist and adding some hot sauce to it. Somewhat like a KPNT-lite, though without the exclusively Active Rock currents.

It's still frankly kind of surprising what the strategy wound up revealing, especially since they wound up taking all of KEGL's audience in a matter of months and have held onto them since KEGL's flip. It turns out that Dallas listeners are more tolerant of modern Alternative than they are of constant radio chatter. Probably helps that modern Alternative has been taking more of a guitar-oriented approach in the last year and change. The gold tracks are also solid; they make sure they have a big KEGL gold or two in every set to keep that audience happy while the typical Audacy music selection remains the core. Similarly, the currents feature a couple of songs KEGL probably would have played mixed with what Audacy is playing nationally. Nothing that isn't officially crossing from Active to Alternative but enough that they're fulfilling the migrated KEGL audience's expectations.

I think Audacy definitely credits Ian Camfield for some of KVIL's success as well. He seems to be a pretty strong mid-day draw in the market, and he still tailors his show primarily for Dallas even while voice-tracking for other markets. He and Audacy know where his primary audience is and he's doing a good job of holding their attention from the looks of it.

That being said, Indie 88.1 is definitely the superior station especially since they have an astounding currents selection. But they lack the signal and presence to give KVIL a challenge.

What I find interesting is that KDGE HD2 has shown up with a 0.2 on the 6+ numbers in both August and September. They don’t stream and have no promotion at all.

I agree. They also play a good variety of gold with new wave as well. The signal is definitely an issue. I often here interference from people’s car FM transmitters. The signal has gotten better, but it’s still an issue.

I’d rather listen to KXT instead of Alt or 88.1

KXT plays more indie rock/pop-rock (Hozier, Lana Del Rey, etc.) than what Alt would play, but unlike KXT, Alt plays more punk and emo (Blink 182, Yungblud).

Indie 88.1 (or what I like to call Alt 88.1 The Edge) lies somewhere in between.

100% agreed. If I could magically tune every radio in the city to KXT and give all the radio money in the city to KXT and KNON, I would. I’d also tune them into our other wonderful non comms here. KXT is a real treasure on the dial. KXT isn’t purely “alternative” though. KXT plays a lot of older music, too.

I’ll always repeat how I can’t personally stand 103.7.

Seems like it is a lot like 107.7 The End or what Alt 92.3 was in New York... I don't think it plays any 80's titles unlike The End though.

I think they are adding in certain songs that most Alternative stations wouldn't add because KEGL is not there so there is no Mainstream Rock station in the market though it is still focused mostly on Alternative.

I haven't heard any 80s alternative songs on 103.7 but I guess that's what Jack and Spot are there for that.

103.7 plays a lot of 80's (and also 90's) on Sunday mornings. Outside of that, pickings are slim. The only 80's they touch regularly are The Cure, Beastie Boys, and R.E.M.

I think that they do that to avoid overlap with the other stations while still keeping it Alternative. 107.7 The End does a bit more 80's though since they have KPNW to compete against now like Tears For Fear, though I'm pretty sure they also play The Cure, Beastie Boys, and R.E.M. I think before KPNW came they probably only touched Beastie Boys "You Gotta Fight For Your Right to Party" regularly.
