Dallas is back in the saddle again-On TNT

That's right... The story continues. Between the current & next generation of Ewings. It's great to see good 'ol JR, Bobby & Sue Ellen ready to show who really is The Big Boss in Big D.

I'm watching and it's ok but I'm having a hard time buying the whole John Ross/Christopher/Elena storyline.

Linda Gray looks terrific but, so far, has had just a couple of minor appearances.

Patrick Duffy looks heavier but about the same. Part of his storyline has him battling stomach tumors.

Larry Hagman looks his age and he's battling health problems.

Charlene Tilton (Lucy Ewing) and Steve Kanaly (Ray Krebbs) had cameo appearances at Christopher's (Bobby's son) wedding. Ken Kercheval (Cliff Barnes) is supposed to be on at some point in the series.

And there's been lots of references to Miss Ellie (the late Barbara Bel Geddes).

I'm interested enough so far to keep watching but they need to ramp it up a bit.

Last night's series return ran about 2 hours & 15 minutes. But next week, it will be back on every Wednesday night on 8 PM Dallas Time. The main highlight during the show was Christopher Ewing's proposal to his girlfriend on the 50-yard line underneath the big JumboTron scoreboard over at Cowboy Stadium.

I never watched the original series (I was too young at the time), but I figured I would try out the new series and I like it so far.

They need to ease up on the commercials.

Are you kidding? This is TNT. To them, program material is just filler between commercial breaks. That's why I'm recording it to watch later.

...New viewer? You then would be at the epicenter of the show's most pressing challenge to attract sufficient numbers of new, younger viewers. Unless the new DALLAS hits the ground running with smash reviews and generates a lot of chat around the water cooler at work, many viewers of the origional series might just ignore the new show. This is because sequels are dicey. Many flop, and viewers know this, so 1st generation DALLAS fans could just blow it off. Producers then must rely on attracting new viewers, unfamiliar with the origional epic, to succeed with ratings strong enough to sustain this interesting experiment.

Last night's kick-off script aptly passed the torch from Bobby, Sue Ellen and JR to the new cast, without upstaging them. On a scale of 1 to 10, I rate last night's opener a 9. Great, credible storylines, if maybe one or two too many.

About Bobby's cancer, couldn't help but wonder if his character will die, then return, ala that feeble plot twist of some 30 years ago. Always felt his character's return from the dead was a bad risk that ulitimately failed the credibility test.

I'd like to know why Dallas is considered a soap opera and not a regular drama. What's the difference? I seem to think that calling it a soap opera gives it a negative connotation.

I thought for what it was worth, it was well done. I was quite young when the original series aired, but I've watched reruns through the years, whether it was on the old TNN or on SoapNet, but with that, I wasn't expecting it to be as great as the original (pre-"Dream" season).

The acting, at least, from the younger actors was kind of "wooden", but not close to terrible, meanwhile, it looked Duffy, Gray, and Hagman haven't missed a beat in their roles. I think this revival has the potential to be a big hit for TNT, just so long as they stay within the spirit of what Dallas: TOS was about--besides the bedhopping, blackmailing, scandal, and greedyness (that was just J.R.), it was about the dynamic of how the Ewing family functioned, and when push came to shove, they were always there for each other.

My admittedly amateur opinion is that a soap consists of a continuing storyline that gradually morphs instead of abruptly changes from show to show. It also has a cast of relatively constant characters who are invariably rich and scheming to get richer. There is always a villainous matriarch or patriarch whose worthless offspring are scheming to get their hands on the family treasure. Soaps tend to be as formulaic as Westerns.

Calling "Dallas" a soap opera might discourage some people not to watch but it will attract others who are into that sort of story telling. One of the attractions of the original series was the individual actors. It will be interesting to see if this generation of actors can do the same.

Having sat down a while back and watched the last several seasons on DVD, plus the three movies (Early Years, JR Returns, and the gosh-awful War of the Ewings), I can honestly say, I've been anticipating this for quite a while.....and I was more than pleased.

It was good to see Bobby, J.R. and Sue Ellen back in the saddle and back in business, and it was good to see Ray and Lucy back as well....even if their appearances were "expanded cameos"...hopefully the writers will find more for both of them.

Next week of course, Ken Kercheval returns as Cliff Barnes, so that'll be something to watch.

I tell you what; Dirty deeds have really done dirt cheap. You can also see a lot of Backstabbing, Money Grubbing, plot scheming, and free wheeling and dealing. Also, in the title sequence you may notice includes The New Omni Convention Center Hotel-now fronting the Dallas skyline, and that hotel really does have the look and feel of a Las Vegas Hotel-without The one arm bandit slots. Also, There's the single arch bridge that enters drivers going east from west; and there's a The Reunion Tower, which still happens to be that city's dominant landmark-with a lighted cueball at the top.

I really enjoyed the reboot last night. I loved the update of the open with all the new things in Dallas.
The 6.9 million viewers made it the most-watched thing on tv last night, topping the 6.7 million for Fox's So You Think You Can Dance.

You noticed the old Dallas is now on CMT Tuesday & Thursday's only??

Being a fan of the original I liked these two episodes. Hopefully they can keep it a decent mix of old/new. I would like to see Donna back on the show if it works out.

I like to see Pam back on the show

Make that two votes for Victoria Principal, as "Pamela Barnes-Ewing".

Come to think of it...It might also be fun to see Barbara Eden reprise her occasional character of "Lee-Ann Dela Vega".
