Dallas Is The Place To Be

I think Dallas has more stations that play oldies than anywhere else.

Mighty 1190-Intense variety probably heard nowhere else except WLNG

KEOM-All seventies all the time

K-LUV-Boring good times, great oldies

Additionally there is an FM soul gold station and an AM Motown Gold station.

There may even be another oldies type station, I am not sure of that.

Where else has more oldies and variety of oldies on the dial than Big D?<P ID="signature">______________

KXEZ covers the north Dallas suburbs and a little of Dallas with primarily music from 1964-1969 with a bit of the '50s and '70s also.

The infamous Jack is also in Dallas.

KZPS plays rock oldies as does "The Bone", KBDN.

Sunny 97.1 plays soft oldies geared toward a female audience.

And as we all know, each week at the beginning of "The Beverly Hillbillies" the kinfolk told Jed to move away from there and "Said Californee is the place you oughta be".

I wonder how much longer they will remain a 1970’s station? Surely they need to do something for the folks who were teens in the 1980’s?

Maybe not, they are a non-profit station around 88.7 on FM. I think they may even be a high school station, but they have a good signal.

88.5 FM actually. People are starting to ask me for music from other decades, besides the 70’s. Also, our Spring 2005 Arbitron estimates were way down, as compared to this time last year. Sure it’s a NCE station that doesn’t have to worry about the ratings. However, the all-70’s format has been in place for almost ten years, and IMHO it’s getting a little stale. Plus we now have way too much 70’s music on quite a few other stations in this market. I fully expect there will be some type of format adjustment for KEOM in the not-too-distant future. As Dr. Griffin says, “Time marches on”.

Re: the Place To Be

Both 1190 and 1160 are up for sale. First Broadcasting is just running these oldies formats as placeholders until then.

Despite being jockless and some real formatic trainwrecks (Fats Domino segued into Coldplay's "Clocks" one morning last month!) both sound good. My only gripe is 1160's is using IBOC, phoneline quality.

What will happen to "The Mighty 1190" and 1160?

What happens to both stations is confusing.

Most assume they will be sold (First is running the stations under an LMA).

Earlier, I heard First was building talk studios for 1190 (just what we need in Dallas -- another talk station).

But All Access had a display ad just the other day which indicated both stations were looking for general managers.

So ... who knows?

Re: The Philadelphia Market

The Philadelphia area is still pretty good for oldies. WOGL just had a good Spring book and plays a pretty repetitive playlist of Motown, soul & '60's & '70's pop, with older songs & doo-wop Sunday nights. WPEN plays '50's & '60's weekdays (infomercials weekends). WSNI plays '60's to '80's soft AC hits and some disco. Cruzin 92.1 from South Jersey reaches much of the area. Suburban WPAZ and Allentown's WKAP serve the northern suburbs. Brokered WNJC has some oldies shows. Non-commercial WRDV plays doo-wop and more obscure '50's music all weekend. WWTR, the WMTR simulcast from central NJ, can be picked up is parts of the suburbs. WBUD in Trenton plays oldies mixed with crossover top 40 standards. WBCB in Levittown plays some oldies in their music mix.
This is still a market that likes soul & doo-wop oldies, and this is available much of the time here.

All right, maybe it is time to change to all sixties.

So you want them to appeal to OLDER people? If anything, Dallas needs a station playing all 1980’s. Think about it, that’s never been done in this market. If they don’t do that, at least they should add some hits from the 1980’s.

1190 was supposed to run Air America when they took it over from Clear Channel. First, CC and Air America had some kind of contractual falling out, and it wound up on KXEB 910 out of Frisco. And I agree the DFW market is glutted with too many talk stations, made even worse when KSKY and KXEB flipped to endless yack this year.

First has always been in the business of picking up small stations, upgrading them like they did with 1160 and then reselling. Maybe they have decided to hang onto a few now? I noticed at thier website they have copyrighted "Guess Whats Next" so these might be thier test bed stations to see what works and what doesnt.

There were promos on 1190 during the all-Beatles stunting mentioning "old time DJ's" but I havent heard anything about that since. I guess we will find out after the commercial free summer is over. I'm curious to see what would happen to 1190 and 1160 if they get some jocks on, and promoted these stations against KLUV, KSOC & KRNB via billboards and TV.

The answer is: probably not much. Unless, everybody had an HD reciever for AM and it sounded just like FM. AND both of the aforementioned stations could be recieved clearly, both day and night, all over the Metroplex. By the time that happens, I'll be collecting SS (I hope LOL).

On the original subject of the thread....having spent last week in Pittsburgh, I can safely say that I haven't heard so many oldies stations playing pre-beatle Doo-Wop and R&B since....well, since I grew up there. On the weekends anybody with a record collection is on the air playng this stuff, the "Pittsburgh Oldies" with an occaisional hit thrown in by accident. There's WLSW in Scotdale, which does this sort of thing all weekend with the likes of Charlie Apple etc...heck, he came to my high school in 1969 to do a record hop!
Also, there are some guys playing greasy oldies on WKFB (?) AM/770 all day Saturday. Then on Sunday, add "Mon Valley Memories" with Jim Dudas at noon on WJPA/95.3. I think he does a 12 hour show!! Then, the only major player in oldies....er, I mean.....The Greatest Hits Of The 60's And 70's", 3WS joins the fray on Sunday night. I, of course, had a radio nearby all the while. Dallas is great, but in sheer volume of actual oldies, NOT Classic Rock or AC type stuff, boy...it's tough to beat the 'burgh.

The problem here is you still have a limited playlist, since it’s one decade. While I personally would favor doing an all 80’s format (granted, it’s the same set of limitations as all 60’s, all 70’s, etc…) there are enough persons in the demographics to support at least two decades. I foresee an evolvement towards a 70’s & 80’s format.

R

> All right, maybe it is time to change to all sixties.

I think music changed during the eighties. In the early years until about 1983 and 1984, there many songs that I liked. After 1984, there were few that I liked.

How about a 1970-1984 format?
