Today in a class, the teacher turned on 105.5 The Pickle. The station sounded like it came from a tin can. The imaging sounded like they used Sound Recorder in Windows to create it. Sounded like they used Media Player to play the music as well. Any other opinions on this hick town station?<P ID="signature">______________

No no no, I've used Sound Recorder to merge PCM audio clips at home and they sounded much better than WYKT. I think they really do use tin cans.

Why in the world would you call yourself The Pickle? What kind
of imagery is that supposed to plant in the listener`s mind?
Let`s see.....pickles are kind of tart, slightly addictive, good on
hamburgers. What format is this and which market are they serving?

pip....they are a station that plays "Rock and Roll hits of the 60's and 70's" Check out the vary basic website they have here.... http://www.wykt.com/

So Tim B....unless you are about 55 years old...I highly doubt you would ever like anything they would ever play. pip you should check it out sometime if you can (coverage is not that great)...there are some interesting songs...to say the least. Check out the coverage here... http://radio-locator.com/cgi-bin/pat?call=WYKT&service=FM&status=L&hours=U

Right.. But.. Like I said, the first usable one iow the first to actually be worth having on your computer was 2.0

Windows 2.0, introduced in the fall of 1987, provided significant useability improvements to Windows. With the addition of icons and overlapping windows, Windows became a viable environment for development of major applications (such as Excel, Word for Windows, Corel Draw!, Ami, PageMaker and Micrografx Designer), and the sales were spurred by the runtime ("Single Application Environment") versions supplied by the independent software vendors.

I`m always in the market for a good oldies station, even though I
have to admit Scott Shannon`s syndicated hit parade on WZZN is
pretty damn good. I`m currently way out of WYKT`s coverage area but
the next time I make a day trip down to Champaign/Urbana I`ll have
to remember to give them a listen and report back here.

LMFAO. I'm only 13, and I was forced to listen to it during Science class. I was just wondering why it sounds worse than my internet radio station!

Sorry, not meaning to take this off topic but.........

Granted, if you were part of the 99% of people that would rather run their nails over a chalkboard rather than learn and use DOS, Windows 1.0 was a welcome.

Pluses: Was not DOS, easier and graphical to use compared to DOS, included MS-DOS Executive, Calendar, Cardfile, Notepad, Terminal, Calculator, Clock, Reversi, Control Panel, PIF (Program Information File) Editor, Print Spooler, Clipboard, RAMDrive, Windows Write, Windows Paint (AKA not available in DOS)

Minuses: Very few applications written for it, did not use overlapping "windows" as we know it today.

It comes down to a matter of preference. Some find Terrestrial radio actually worth having. Others do not believe that and think Satellite raido with commercial free, a plethora of channels and scrolling displays of song/artist are more "usable".

Now if IBM OS/2 had taken off.........<P ID="signature">______________

Re: OS/2

Hello:

What was the problem with OS/2? EVERY genius in the world that I knew swore by it, while I was busy playing with my own copy of Windows. What was the difference between the two? Can someone enlighten me?

Thanks!

Re: OS/2

OS/2 was created by IBM, and was installed on the majority of their home desktops (which were humongous clunkers!).

To sum it up in simple terms, it was a consumer scenario just like Sony. They couldn't get enough manufacturers to go with OS/2. And as a result, the demand wasn't created. Just like how Sony couldn't get anyone to switch to Betamax. Or digital compact cassette (DCC). Or mini-discs. Or blu-ray Universal Media Discs (the handheld PSP format). Great technology, but no one bought it.<P ID="signature">______________

1.0 was very clunky, and there was not much software. 2.0 and the next-year release of Windows 2.1 286 and 2.1 386 were vastly improved, and we got software like Pagemaker, Corel Draw 1.0, etc., and databases and other useful stuff... even Ami, the first Widows word processor.

When used with things like QEMM386 for memory optimization, a lot could be done in the appliscations.

Re: OS/2

OS/2 was a very good OS (still is). I was reminded of that when they had to reboot one of the terminals at Stop & Shop the other night. OS/2 WARP (and LANtastic) run a lot of POS systems.

The flaw in OS/2 was a feature. IBM made a mistake that was typical for Big Blue: they had promised their clients that they would have a "windowing OS" for the brain-dead 286 AT and by gum, Microsoft had to write it. Microsoft wrote the original code for OS/2 1.0 and 1.1 (which Gates wanted to create for the Intel 80386 and above). The problem was the 80286 was buggy and not ready to play nicely with protected mode. A bug in the chip itself meant that it had to be "stalled" to make it shift out the 640k real mode that DOS and Windows up to 2.11 used along with EMS paged memory).

Microsoft and IBM "broke up" over OS/2 and Windows with Bill Gates drawing a line in the sand between the two OSs. IBM went on to create OS/2 2.0 and then 3.0 WARP. Both were powerful multitaskers when Windows 3.1 couldn't do much but look good and swap programs to HD in the background. OS/2 actually ran each program in its own protected memory space (something Windows finally did in NT/2000/XP). The 32 bit file system written for OS/2 is now called NTFS and is used by every XP box sold.

IBM spent over 1 billion dollars promoting OS/2 WARP and they were beaten in the marketplace by the very kids they made mega-rich.

Wow. How did we Hi, Jack! this tread??

Let me say something RADIO -- shotgun jingle. Better. As you were.

It's a metaphor. Pickles are cucumbers that have been preserved, so that they'll keep almost indefinitely. And music that's been "pickled" is still good, no matter how old it is.
