I had many opportunities to, um, "obtain" the mic Ron and company used for years over at the old 9400 North Central Expwy studios. It was sitting in a box, out in the elements, in a little fenced-off storage area in the Fitzhugh parking garage. Now THIS one had the real years on it...not just the last few at KLUV, but the KVIL years. The foam windscreens were nearly worn away.

Wish I had known THAT back then. Ron was never happy with the KLUV studio mic. If he had known his old KVIL mic was sitting in a box conveniently located in the... errr... parking garage... I bet he would have sent for it.

Just curious here... what Mic's were at KLUV and what Mic did Chaoman prefer?

The one from KVIL, at least, was beefy and capsule-shaped with foam at each end, IIRC. I'm sure there's a common name for it that I *should* know, but I don't. Reminded me of a boom mic that you'd see in a TV studio. Jody or Steve could likely give a better description and/or the brand name and type.

Sounds like you're talking about a SM5B. Search google images for that and I bet it'll be what you're thinking of.

That's a Shure SM5B. Needless to say, Ron had excellent mic technique and knew how to move around a mic, raising and lowering his voice, but keeping a consistent level.

The SM5B is very forgiving in that regard. You can move around, but still be within its sweet spot. The Electrovoices that everyone uses these days have a tiny sweet spot. When you're not in it, your sound changes for the worse very quickly.

Now when you are in an Electrovoice's sweet spot, the sound is quite good, especially for the price. But with the right processing and EQ, an SM5B can more than make up for that.

Course... they don't make the SM5B's anymore. Which makes it that much more of a shame that you saw that mic being stored out in the friggin' parking garage, Mike. Again, if I had known, I would've gone and grabbed it. I always had to borrow an extra SM5B from the 12th floor.

I did ask about the mic, and someone said the rest of the KVIL stuff from 9400 NCX was packed away at a nearby storage facility...but no one had the authority to give the mic away...and I didn't want to approach too many folks about it, as it would have turned up missing and in someone else's hands instead. I won't rehash the honesty angle, but I didn't want to screw up that job by being caught stealing, even if the mic wouldn't have ever been missed. Instead, I get fired for writing not-so-nice things on Radio-Info. :(

You're right, that's the mic. I tried the model # and found some photos of it on Google Images.

When I say I would have gone and grabbed it, I mean that I would have gotten it for my studio (the Cowboys studio) on the 7th floor. I didn't mean a five finger discount... :D

But I bet Ron would have loved to have swapped it in to the on-air studio as well.

The SM5B was the mic we used at The ZOO. It was nicknamed Fat Albert. I was told that the mic was originally created as a TV boom mic, with a lot of low end to compensate for the distance from boom to performer. It had a nice warm sound on the air, and with the big foam cover, it was impossible to pop.
