Four really great segments from the 2003 "Rewound".

!972 Was thea year when AM radio and single sales rebounded from album-concept-fm era, you can clearly hear both Ingram and WABC at the top of their game. Wabc with it's simple wideband processing and Dan Ingram with impeccable timing and mature humor really show what is missing from radio today.

Its interesting to note that even though this is the top-rated station in the City, and two weeks away fron Christmas, the spot load remains tolerable, no more than one-or-two and back to music.

Thanks for the link, I have previously heard and dl's the Jack Sterling cut. His approach was typical of the more sophisticated post-war style that often poked fun at sponsors. However it also underlines the near total domination that sponsors and their agency folks had over most programs. At times Sterling's show seems more concentrated on the agency people in the studio than the listeners at home.
albeit, with gentle mocking.

As for my comments about WABC ca 1972, the point is simply that even with a maddenly short playlist the stations managed to be entertaining, the station had a reasonable approach to spot load and allowed it's hosts to be more than just a signal that six minutes of commercials are coming and it's time to punch to another station.
