Per the New York local board,

"Dan Ingram passed away in Florida this evening at the age of 83. He had numerous neurological problems over the last few years and his death was a consequence of choking. According to his son Chris, he did not suffer."

Dan was one of the most listened to DJs in the history of Top 40 Radio and he was an example to many in the business.

Back when we used the ICQ messaging toy, I somehow managed to get the 'Uh-oh' cue changed to the 'DANNN Ingram' sounder. Drove the wife nuts, but it was effective.

What a legend he was. And still is. God bless.

Dan was one of the most listened to DJs in the history of Top 40 Radio and he was an example to many in the business.

If memory serves me correctly, he holds the record for having the most listeners to a single station. Back in the '70s, when Big Dan was informed of his recent 28 share, he quipped, "that means 72 percent are still not listening!"

I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Ingram and watching him at the microphone at WABC. Now, sadly, after decades of entertaining us with that inimitable wit and extraordinary timing, the Dan Ingram Electric Radio Theatre is off the air. Bye now, Big Dan.

Back in the mid-'80s the station I was working for (WKXL-FM, Concord, NH) ran Dan's "Top 40 Satellite Survey" on Saturdays from 9:00 AM to noon....I had a chance to do a couple of "talk-ups" for him, and got to speak with him
personally on one occasion...For some reason I don't recall actually hearing Dan on WABC -- but his show was promo'd (perhaps he was on during daylight hours, so I wasn't able to catch him up here in central NH....).
RIP, Dan.......:(

Re his ratings, didn't he once go on the air and say, "I got some bad news today...I just found out WABC is the number 14 station...In Pittsburgh!"

Big Dan was always MUST listening every afternoon on the Home of The All Americans, Seventy~7 WABC. He was always there with wit, humor and typical NYC sarcasm. His voice and delivery were larger than life, so when it was run through the heavy reverb, Dan sounded like a radio god. He was. A tip of the fez for all the great times, Keemosabe!

I liked and admired Dan Ingram, but kudos to this board for it's measured restraint in paying tribute to him. Other boards are saying life will never be the same!

Ingram was the right voice for the right time. He worked hard, made a difference, and he was rewarded for it.

But life and radio move on.

RIP Big Dan.

I remember listening to the 101.1WCBS-FM airchecks of Ingram and was at his best too over on his second stint on FM radio.

Note Ingrams first stint on FM Radio was in the mid-1960's at WABC-FM 95.5.
