Dan Lavollo out at WDRC (AM)

According to their Facebook page, The Talk of CT's afternoon host Dan Lovallo was let go today for "budgetary" reasons. His politics were a bit to the right of mine but I listened all the time because he did a great job covering local issues. And he let his callers talk without interrupting them or making fun on them. One of the first remaining local talk shows pulled off the air I assume for a syndicated show leaving apparently Brad Davis and Mary Jones as the only local shows on the station. A sad day indeed.

Another sad reminder of the relentless Great Advertising Depression at "old media" like radio and newspapers that appeal more to the 55+ crowd than the demographics advertisers want to reach. Dan's politics are far to the right of mine, but as you said, he was a real pro on air. I also was a big fan of his work alongside Jeff Dooley on Rock Cats baseball before Buckley lost the Cats contract to the CBS Radio cluster.

Dan Lavollo would make a good sports talk host or co-host for 97.9. He did excellent daily commentaries when he did sports and news on Brad's morning show.

Although this blue state is not big enough for two conservative afternoon shows in Hartford, unfortunately the better show got canceled.

I hate seeing anyone lose their job. However I don't think that one needs to go any farther than WDRC AM's piss-poor ratings. Ms. Winters, you can't compete with WTIC and their 50,000 watt signal with a bunch of El Rushblow wannabees. Unless she moves Jones into the 3-6 slot, WDRC will be adding another satellite fed conservaloon. Have you ever heard of the term "counter programming???

I really don't get all of your personal attacks on Grahame. If you think format decisions are coming from the PD, think again. You're barking up the wrong tree. Format decisions and budget decisions come from on high (The GM and ownership.). It wasn't Grahame's call to cut Lovallo. It wasn't Grahame's call to cut Larry Wells last year. Redirect your hate higher up the food chain, that's where it belongs.

Really, Reely??? She's the Program Director, which means that she's responsible for what programs air on the station. Is this not the idea of a PROGRAM DIRECTOR!!! It's not hate of Winters, but to simply point out that in a match up with WTIC, WDRC loses very badly, as evidenced by the ratings (or lack thereof). I doubt that Lovallo was let go and she had no input into that decision. WDRC AM might just want to consider something else. And besides Fahnoe is even less responsive than she is and I've tried to email him with no response.

Here's how radio works: The GM goes to the PD "You have a choice of who you can cut, and you have until Monday to make your choice." The GM want's that salary gone, and you make it so, else they will find someone who will.

Don't blame the PD when the budget ax swings - do you really think that us PD's WANT to fire people? It's the worst part of the job, and I'm sure Mrs. Winters takes no pleasure in it.

Apparently you've never worked in radio. Spend a year in the industry and you'll learn that's not true. Yes, there's input, but a PD is never the final voice. It doesn't matter if it's Buckley, CBS, Cumulus, Clear Channel, or if it's 1972 or 2012. You're talking about mandates that come from above the PD level.

Actually I have. It wasn't for long but I have. (Three+ months at a small AM/FM in Concord,NH.) As for Rita Cosby replacing Lovallo, I have no use for either one, but if that's the choice, I'd take Lovallo. Perhaps the entire WDRC management needs to join Lovallo in the unemployment line????

Basic Radio Management 101. This is right out of the scene from "Private Parts" when Moti, the GM of WRNW, wants Howard Stern, the station's PD, to "fire Dickie Davis."

WOR strikes again. So much for local talk.
Memo to WOR management, sell a station.

Dan Lavollo has now posted material to his new website at http://cttalking.com. Scroll to the bottom for Dan's first video entry in which he mentions his new social media venture and his "unceremonious departure from a certain based Hartford radio network".

Sounds like someone isn't happy with certain management figures at a certain group of radio stations with its main studios and offices located on Blue Hills Avenue in Bloomfield, but I can't mention names.
