Dan Lynch says goodbye...

Talk 1300 afternoon drive host is calling it quits for now to spend time with family and friends. He also wants to spend more time writing his books. Can check in on Dan and see what he is up to at his website www.forpeoplewhothink.com.

How's his ratings? He the only local afternoon talk show in the capital region, his numbers should be good.

Well, there he goes! One of a dying breed on talk radio, a thinker not a demagogue. I will really miss him!

I never had the time to listen to Al Roney while he was on 9am to noon on WGY. I was sorry to see him associated with the recent local Tea Party rally. Perhaps if he does replace Dan he will be fair and not a clone of either the far right or far left blowhards.

Just heard this morning from Paul V. that he was talking with someone to take the afternoon slot but the candidate got a better offer outside of radio. Hope that wasn't Al Roney. Paul also said it time for change the station is 2.5 years old and it's time for change. Live Local overnights, Local talk show Saturday mornings in place of swap shop. Dr.Laura is getting the boot and so is Lou Dobbs...

Allot of changes at Talk 1300 capital region talker with the most local talk!

Since you didn't listen you couldn't know that Roney was never a clone of the left or right and decried that two headed monster and those who fell for the false left-right paradigm. Funny how even media savvy participants to this site buy the MSM attempts to discredit the original tea party, which if you follow the poll numbers has everything to do with the fact that Americans of all walks support it. Roney was in on the first local rally last year.

Yeah Dan was very good but tended to represent establishment views as truth and promote their solutions and as we are all finding out the hard way they created the problems in every avenue, and that includes the demise of radio.
I just pray that Paul doesn't plan to put Pat Ryan or Kelly Stephens as a replacement for Lynch.

Kellly Stevens will be doing the afternoon show till a replacement is found. She is no Dan Lynch but she brings a different view to the show, she keeps it interesting.

After a few days of listening to her host the afternoon shift on Talk 1300 I have to say in Kelly Stevens favor that she sounds better than Dan in certain respects. Kelly has much better radio talent. The show is better paced now with more callers getting on the air. Dan would let some callers go on too long or the show would stop dead in it’s tracks while he went into a monologue. Don’t get me wrong. Dan was a brilliant fellow who had a lot of interesting points to make and tales to tell drawing on a storied journalistic career and he told the truth right down the line. Kelly’s strength is in getting lots of callers on the air and keeping the show moving.
I rather have her stay than get a dodo like Sherman Baldwin back on local radio.

Some of us have been speculating that the person that Paul VanDenburgh was looking at for a replacement for Dan Lynch and took a job outside of radio might have been Al Roney. Well now after reading an article in a local paper, I wonder if it was former News10 reporter Tracy Egan. She has just taken a job with the NYS Thoroughbred Breeding and Development Fund Corp. A job that pays 119K per year. Paul appeared on the former news10 sunday morning program with her for years so they are well aquainted.

OH PLEASE! Getting lots of callers on the air is good Programing? And to think you used to be a PD. Kelly has much better radio talent? Lynch was a communicator, Stevens is a sausage maker.

I'm speaking of radio technique. Dan could be a little stiff and tended towards pontificating at times. He constantly was apologizing for running late on segments. He was very intelligent and I miss his learned opinions and life stories from his distinguished career in journalism. Kelly presents a livelier mix of opinions and a better pace for radio. She can never compete with Dan's depth on issues so she's gone with her strenghts by making the show more listener centered, kind of like a "Voice of the People" program. And she's a lot more interesting than Sherman Baldwin was on the old WROW.
I don't know who you think I am but I was never a PD.

I agree that Kelly has an affable delivery on air - she needs to be a little more focused on NYS politics. She could pick up some of the loss from Roney and Steve and Jackie but she will need to take control of her show a bit more. It takes time.

As far as Sherman? The ONLY person that though Sherman's show was good was - Sherman. Will this guy ever go away?

…she needs to be a little more focused on NYS politics. She could pick up some of the loss from Roney and Steve and Jackie but she will need to take control of her show a bit more. It takes time.

More of the same brilliance that has laid waste to local radio – this logic isn’t even mixing apples with oranges, it’s mixing apples with radiator hoses. Roney listeners are not, nor will they ever be in the same basket with those who tuned into Steve and Jackie. On a scale of 1-10 in degrees of separation, Roney was a 10 and Steve and Jackie a 1. Roney’s content was serious, compelling and attempted to turn around a dying system. His listeners wanted to know the who, how, why and where, something they couldn’t get on AM 590. Neither are they likely to be fooled by Kelly’s schtick. “…she needs to be a little more focused on NYS politics”? What does this sage think Dicker is doing and NO ONE is gonna out-Fred, Fred. As for Kelly being the voice of the people; which people would those be - Beyoncé fans? She has demonstrated she has very limited depth, just enough to play the oh so tired and untrue liberals vs. conservative game. Far from being genuine, these posts are merely PR sniglets lobbed to highlight non-existent qualities in an attempt to keep a gig. No, what radio needs, what America needs are those who are able and willing to shovel down below the surface and expose the lies and corruption that is killing everything in America, including radio. It’s not being done by any outlet locally. Unfortunately the one guy who could change all of that also lacks the vision to see what’s staring us in the face and all the time in the world ain’t gonna change that.

From the horse's mouth via the TU:
WGDJ is looking for a new afternoon host — and Al Roney is in the running.
Paul Vandenburgh (at right), the head of WGDJ (Talk 1300 AM), said Tuesday he expects to name a replacement for departed afternoon host Dan Lynch sometime next week; he said he’s now in the process of weighing potential hires.
Kelly Stevens, who has been serving as interim host for the 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. timeslot, is being considered, Vandenburgh said. And so is Roney. “I’ve talked to a couple of people but haven’t decided,” Vandenburgh said. “I’m still not 100 percent sure.”

The comments on the blog are very telling. We'll soon see how smart Mr. Vandenburgh really is.

I think Roney is a no brainer, but I also think Kelly Stevens would be good to have one of those hours 2-3PM? to do a program somewhat oriented towards women's issues. It would not be like "EVE" that was a full time format. Al is is probably going to be talked out after 3 hours.

Knickman, what exactly are Women's Issues? Is not the stuff Roney covers everyone's issues? Stevens talks about her insurance business so let her go sell policies to women.
