Dan Mason fed Up with CBS!

Dan Mason has been telling certain close friends he wants out. Says he's tired of getting blamed for all thats wrong with radio. Also says he's sick and tired of having to fire good people just to put questionable syndicated shows on in more and more important dayparts. Possible return of John Gehron????

Coulda fooled me... :) but as i recall, one of the FIRST things that Mason said AFTER he took over the CBS Radio stations was that the "Jacking" of WCBSFM was a mistake - and the rest was HISTORY and here we are, 18 months later....with WCBSFM being successful, and Mason talking about leaving...Oy Vey!!

Don't think so. This is another poster ruse, from one who has "invented" past speculation, especially about CBS stations that never happened (like in Philadelphia.) Dan Mason wouldn't tell close friends who would come back and tell an anonymous board poster anything ... especially since it is widely known that Dan checks the boards once in a while. And that's fact, incidentally.

Think about it. What credibility would there be in saying crap like this publicly without verification? Any self righteous "broadcaster" would do better than not speculate, period, rather than invent something so far fetched. We ran through this similar scenario with this poster in the past, namely about WYSP-FM (not even close) and WOGL's replacement for Big Ron O'brian (not even close.)

Not true. The person I named was indeed offered the job but turned it down.

When someone has to hang their hat on a job they had over 30 years ago, they have to find something to do with their life to seem like they are still connected, lol....

Boss Jock - I don't want to get into a flame on this, but you are so full of crap. You suggested, not once, but at least three times from the archive still available that a "contract had been signed and word would come out in a week." And it didn't come out for months.

And your excuses for WYSP were so lame, they were ridiculous.

CBS has strict rules about "posters" ... let alone those who "speculate, start rumors, etc." Your post has, in fact, been sent to Dan Mason for comment. He's not that hard to get to.

You don't listen very well...originally i said this person had signed a contract. I then posted. Several days later this person backed out. I just decided to not post after that because i knew know it all's like you would start raising hell.

Where have you been hiding under a rock? Go to any media outlet or information source and people speculate all the time. I'm just posting something i heard about mason by a few at competing companies. I happen to think dan is a great radio guy but i just thought i'd share what i heard. Whether it's true or not i don't know.

Is "BossJock1947" the same person who was caught redhanded creating a fantasy post about Howard Stern, or am I confusing him with someone else?

[EDIT]

At least YOU gotta forgive my mocking tone, BossJock1947; you buckled under Oakrat's threat as
most who fear a loss of paycheck often do. But-- "Great radio guy?" Really? Is that why Mason
got rid of SO MANY of the people in the last 20 months that WERE his real inventory?

What a pantload. Dan is sick of CBS? CBS Radio, you mean? Tired of being BLAMED for "what's wrong
with radio," or being what's wrong? He certainly ain't part of the solution. How about being a little ill over
being fingered as the fall guy in front of the entire planet for getting caught eradicating live talent and replacing
them with less expensive pre-recorded ubiquity. Sick about being found out, MAYBE.

But let's be fair to the large crowd of "good people" he slashed from the CBS budget:

He's not a great radio guy, BJ'47, he's at best a strip miner. A corporate yes-guy, not even a broadcaster anymore.
Maybe he's sick of having been told what to do by Moonves.

[EDIT] will never gonna buy that, but, YEAH, much more probable.

Simply put Mason is a corporate hatchet man. What goes around comes around. ;D

I have to say I think that's incredibly unfair. I met Dan last summer at the AAA convention, and he really seemed like an actual, real radio guy. But what could anyone do with the incredible shrinking budgets that CBS's debt service and very soft ad revenues dictate? I wouldn't want to be in his shoes...

Name one business sector in this country that has not made similar or grater cuts.

I'm not defending or dissing CBS or Dan Mason... just calling for a clear understanding of what may be a radio issue and what is caused by the current economic state of the nation.

I worked for Dan years ago and I know him to be dedicated to radio as an entertainment medium, as well as a profitable industry.

Dan is a programmer at heart. He didn't make it to the top of CBS by moving up through sales. He comes from the creative side.

He's one of the few execs who rose to station GM and then corporate stewardship by finding a niche and then putting up (or reviving) a good format that sells, rather than taking the "safe" approach -- copying existing profitable formats -- that most radio corporate leaders are doing these days.

If there were more station group leaders and network execs like him this might be a much more exciting industry.

Just my 2-cents...

Very active until 98?

And your last accomplishment was an RKO PD and KHJ Jock? 20 years of downhill it seems.

Oh, wait a minute....we know Bobby Rich was the only RKO PD (at 99x) that was on air at KHJ.....and he did not retire in 98...thus you have made up your entire resume.

Pretty sad.

Never said i was a RKO PD. Read my bio moron. It says PROGRAMMER. I was involved in syndicaton, worked closley with consultants and their client stations. Left RKO to program in two top 20 markets and eventually management. Tell me i'm a liar and i'll tell you you're making a fool of yourself as usual.
