Dan Patrick or Jim Rome?

Yeah the soccer bashing gets old especially during and after this current world cup, I do like the big show hour on Patrick. I usually listen to a local show most of the time during the 11am-2pm time slot anyway.

Patrick's show took a step back when Dibble left. I loved listening to it when Dibble and Salsbury were on there. Any clue why they were taken off? I know Dibble is on Best Damn now and Salsbury is strictly NFL.

With Dibble moving to FOX, I don't think espn brass would approve of RD being a part of the DP Show, & Sean wanted to have more time to do other things in sports broadcasting.

Colin Cowherd is a notch above both of them. But if I had to choose between the two - it is no contest - Dan Patrick (especially with Keith Olbermann) is far more listenable than Jim Rome. Dan Patrick's downside is that he: can be somewhat boring at times, sometimes seems like he hasn't done much prep before the show, and sometimes he thinks his segments are more interesting - than I think his listeners find them to be.Jim Rome's downside is that he: is arrogant, cocky, condescending; is always trying to drum up fake outrage over frivolous sports stuff, and is just hard to listen to for an extended period of time (like fingernails on a chalk board).

I haven't listened to Cowherd since he initially replaced Tony Kornheiser (who blew 'em all away, IMO). I thought Cowherd was terrible. Is he really that much better now?

Comparing Rome and Patrick, those are two distinct personalities. Apples and oranges. Rome is very high-energy, while Patrick has a more laid back wit. Haven't listened to him much since Dibble left, but I've caught him with Olbermann a few times, and those two work well together. I'd have to say it's a toss-up. Maybe Rome, because he is what he is, has been consistent, and can work alone while relying heavily on callers. Patrick works best with a foil, but is still pretty good.

Short answer: Yes, I think he's a notch above the rest of the sports talk competition now.

I'd give him another listen - and see what you think.

Actually, after hearing Kornheiser go off on Mike Golic and that critic at his own paper last week (re: ESPN NFL booth work), I feel much better about my original hypothesis years ago - that this Tony guy can hammer everyone else, but is pretty infantile about taking even the most mild criticism. I suppose I never understood the love fest with Kornheiser that used to be around this site anyway. For being considered a real professional, he sounded like a whining little wuss recently.

I am much more interested in Cowherd...very funny, very fresh, just smart-assed enough to keep it interesting. To me, makes Kornheiser's old show seem bitter at worst, stale at best.

Kornheiser's main problems were with

A: Golic having said he'd rather have a football guy in the booth every time someone mentioned MNF ever since TK was hired.
B: Someone at his own paper ripping him after only one show, and then making a "get a tan" joke when Tony has just recently been treated for skin cancer.

:-[ Rome. Fortunately, I don't have to listen to him on the radio (He should "get a tan" for that hip-hop cred he craves), but do watch his TV humor program. Rome IS Caliendo! The fill-in hosts are incredible as well. Whitlock be actin' like he in da hood, Bayliss' citing Romy-isims... ;D That's comedy! He does have some of the best callers I've heard anywhere though.

I'm usually hearing Scott Ferrall replays (Sirius) then. Patrick's boring, but OK for breaking news.

Mike & Mike is bad sports radio. Golick's brother had a better radio show... ;)
