I don't think a host succeeds in the long run by telling callers that they 'only have a few seconds left' and then monopolize that time by reinforcing how 'smart' he is. Dan has an annoying habit of talking over the callers and truncating what they have to say so he can fit his side of things in there. A Rea apologist might suggest that's exactly what a radio host is supposed to do. But you could fill a week's worth of shows with situations where a caller was on a good, cogent track. He (or she) had good points to make and in an engaging way. So what if 'Mel from Meffa' is waiting on Line 2. BFD. 'Mel from Meffa' might be a total TOOL. Or worse, Rea might want to 'monologue' when he really ought not. The radio world is full of hosts who monologue simply because it's 'their' show. Haughty.
Yes, we get that Rea is a smart, opinionated, 'learned' guy. We get that. We do. Really. But don't wax on about how important the calls are, and then short-circuit every one by essentially saying, 'Enough about you, let's talk about me.' Whether it's sports-talk or issues-oriented radio, today's talk-show hosts have an annoying 'It's-about-ME' attitude. Dan tries to balance it out--otherwise he's toast--but force-feeding the audience his pedigree and resume in a semi-disguised way will make his 'heard in 38 States' audience grow weary.
